DUMP SITUATI01(-PERRY STREET~' Chief Hargreaves, Ohief~cKee, Ira:D. 0artyandmembers of'the'B~ard'of Health were present to discuss the dump situation. The matter of having a man at the dump permanently was discussed ~ut no action was"taken as there "is no money available this year. Mr. Thomson talked about.the papers and' asked if they could be collected separately and have the Fire Dep~rtment burn the~ so that they would not he blowing ell over the place, Chief Hargreaves ststed that inorder to do this effectively, itwould be necessary to have'a wire cage to prevent the paper from blowing. ~ohn ~. Connors was also present and hesuggested spraying the dump witb'D.D.T. to get rid of the flies and mo~quitoes first and then burn t~. papers later. 477 JUNE 20, 1949: continued Dr. Holt agreed that this was an excellent suggestion from the health point of view and due to the many polio cases throughout the country, he thought this should be done. at once. Mr; Carry suggested having the bulldozer there and clean it up and then have a fence or gate erected at the entrance and no dumping would be allowed after 4;30 P.M. George CatCh, Board of Health felt that this was a good idea. Mr. Coffin suggested that the papers be collected and either be burned or be sent to Lawrence. There was a general discussion on various ideas and it was finally decided that the Police, Fire and Tree departments would give a man to workwith Irs Carty on Friday and they will pick up all newspaper throughout the town and after that people will be expected to burn their papers. The bosr& also suggested that perhaps Mr. Duffy would give a man for that day also. POLICE DEPARTMENt. The bo,ard, inquired if Chief McKee would have a sufficient number of men as extras for~the Fourth of July and he felt that he could very easily use three more due to traffic conditions and also to the calebration planned by the Community Center. He will check on the veterans who took the examination and see if.they are i~ edwin' wbrking and if so a list will be sent to Civil'Service for approval. REGISTRAR.OFVOTERS: At the request of John J. Lyons, town clerk, the board voted unanimouslyto appoint Patrick Cronin to the Board of Registrars of Voters. His'term has expired at this time; UN~0N SCHOOL: Theboard discussed the matter of disposing of the Union School and land and wentover the bids which had been received. Mr. W.'Muzichuk-of 196 Lincoln Ave. Saugus,was the highest bidder and they ~oted to inquire and see if his bid was still in order andhave him contact the board before July 1, 1949. They also discussed the ten'foot strip of land which was requested by Miss Doris. Stewart so that' she would have a right of way into her'gaFage. The board agreed ~hat $75.00 was:a fair price for this land and voted to inform Miss Stewart and. askthat the board bd~notified before July 1st meeting. The matter of thedesks was discussed and they wanted to check and see if the people were still interested in buying them.' This matter will come'up again / at the meeting on July 1st. TOWER CLOCK-~OHNSON HIGH SOH00L: A letter was received from the Howard Clock Products, Inc. informing the board that repairson the clock would amount to $355.00 and that there would be no charge for .the survey if the orde~ was_received within thirty days. The board discussed this'matter and decided'that'~hey wodld contact the Advisory Hoard to see if they would replenish tbeContingen~,Fund, if necessary, at the end of the year, if this amount is to be paid. for repairs to the clock, Theheard felt that the work should be done and that-this was a fair and reasonable price for the amount of work required. B & M RAILROAD: · · Notice received with respect to various signs throughout the town at the rail- road crossings which are either missing and some in poor condition and.this matter was referred to the Highway Department'and the Police Department for action. BRADSTREET'SOHOOL: A letter was received from the Supt, ~f Schools, informing the board that the Bradstr~etmScheol ~s to be abandoned andasked that the Selectmen have the school razedor removed. The next meeting of the Schoo~ committee is not until July 7, but Mr. O'Brien informed 'the board that individually~the members of the School Committee have approved this request and official actionwill be taken at the next meeting. ' A letter was also received from Mr. Pitkin, chairman of a committee appoimted by the Eclectic Club to sponsor a movement to make the,Union School a recreational center. 'The letter states that a motion was made that the Selectmen ~e notified that sJ far'as the particular interests of this committee is concerned they may go ahead with their proposed sale of theUnionScheol.' The Board~then voted to hold a special town' meeting.on ~uly 11, 1949 to ask permission to sell or dispose of the. old Bradstreet School building to be held in the Court Room at 7:30 P.~. D~GEOLAINANDRELEASE: A damage claim release was received from the Van Raalte Company, Inc. for the amount of $110;00 for repairs to a car involved in an accident with the road tractor driven by Harold Windle of the Highway Department. Mr. Mahoney's bill for services. 478 JUN~ 20,1949-continued REVOLVER PERMITS: Revolver permit applications were approved unanimously for Anthony~Lau~enza, 40 Longwood Ave. and Ralph F. Davis, 104 Milk Street. BOARD 0FAPPEALS: Notice received %hat the Board of Appeals denied the variance permit to George Rennin to erect a fruit and 9egetabla stand at 200 Chicke~ing Ro~d', North Andover, on June 18, 1949. ~UNE24, 1949: Weekly bills and payrolls were approved on this day by the Board. No regular meeting was held. ADVISORYBOARD: A letter received from Arnold Salisbury, Chairman of the AdVisory Board~ stated that the board felt that a direct transfer from the res'errs fund'might be well warranted for tbs amount of $355200 for repairing the tower clock' in the high school and suggested that the proper forms be filled out, signed and returned to him for approval. This matter was taken care of.on this day. · The by-monthly meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held on this day, due to the holiday on July 4, 1949. Weekly.bills and payrolls were approved. TREE HEARING: A hearing was held at 7:30 P.M. on the petition of John Cashman of F~rber'Ave. for permission to have three trees removed on Winter Street. The Board~voted unanimously to have the trees removed. HEARING on petition of Pauline Frost for removal of a tree in front of her property at 43 Marblehead Street. Board voted unanimously t~ grant.?quest and instructed the tree warden to remove the trees. BATHING BEACH: ' Mr. Thomson informed themembers that Mr. Dully had requested a police, officer at the Bathing Beach over the holiday, due to. the large crowds expected. The board voted to pay the~officer from the contingent since the police chief has not sufficient funds :o take cgre.of· this item. LAWRENCE GAS &ELECTRIC COMPANY: " Permission granted to excavate to instati gas service for new 'elementary school, Main St. near Osgood St. 19' on street. Permission grantedto excavate gas service for Dennis McDuffie, Chapin Road, 14' on street, v. ~ASS. SELECTMEN'S ASSOCIATION: 'As sponsors for the drive for' the Children's Medical Center campaign, the association requested this board to appoint a chairman to place coin boxes in various stores, taverns and other places. Drive will be the second week in August. The board appointed Chief Alfred H. MCkee as chairman of this drive. HOWARD CLOCK PRODUCTS CO: Notice received that work will be started to repair the to,er cl6ck in the Johnson High School the early part of July as authorized b~ the board.' UNION SCHOOL BUILDING AND LAND: The board awarded the contract for the school building and land to Mr. Waeil Muzichuk of 198 Lincoln Ave. Saugus, for the sum of $2~00 and a deposit of $100.00 was paid by Mr. ~uzichuk, on this day., transfer to be completed .not later than 8:00 P.M. on July 11, 1949. The board will ask Mr. C.J. Mahoney to prepare the deed necessary for the sale of the land and building, with a special notation that if the building is to be torn do~n,~Mr. Muzichuk will fill the cellar and leave tbs place in good condition. DESES: The 62 desks and choirs were awarded to ~Brid~et Dennis of 86 Ashland Street for the sum of $7.00 and will he removed before July 11, 1949.
