ARMED FORCES DAY:
The board received an invitation to attend ovservances on May 20, 1950
at Salem when a memorial will be dedicated to the late George ~. Bates.
The board will try to have a representative present.
BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS:
Mr. Duffy called the attention of the board to articles 50,52,55,56 and
57with respect to action which may be taken ak A specia~ town meeting
on articles 46,47,48 and 49 pertaining to the posting of a bond by the
petitioners with the SeIectmen as a condition bo the installation of
~wayer and sewer mains and the substitutio~ of a procedure under Chapter
~80 of the General Laws~ No mction was taken att his time.
'PUBLIC SCHOOLS:
'Notice received that Janitor William Callahan of Johnson Hi'Ah School would
'arrive at the age of compulsory retirement on June 30, 1950. John'J. Cushing
will be the new Janitor and will receive compensation, for the care'of the
High School as of Ju~y 1, 1950.
LAWR.ENCE GAS&ELECtRIC COMPANY:
Letter informing the board that a 1000'lumen indandescent streetlight has
been installed on pole #3312, LymanRoad 9s requested by this board_on
April 12,1950.-
REQUEST:
Arequest for a stree~ light to be installed on pole number #1305, Linden
Avenue was received from mr. Piper and the board voted unanimously to
grant t~his request.
RECREATIONAL' COUNCIL:
This council requested permission to install a basket' ball set oh th~
Center School yard and the matter was ko be referred to the School department
%o see ifit was agreeable ko them. Mr. ~mith, chair~ of the Council,'
stated in his letter that the Council recommended last May that the whole
krea noQvused as a school yard be added to the Drummond Playgroundas a
park and playground area. This recommendation was forwarded to the School
Depar:ment and was ko be called to the attention.%f the members a~ the
nextmeeting.
Apeti~ion signed by over sixty residents opposing the location 'of an
open air Sheatre on the Poor Estate w~s received by the board. The petitioners
believe that the location of s~ch a theatre would s~riously deplete the
valuation of the property in this area And would not be for the best interest
of the town. The board voted to accept the petition and place it on, file
for future reference. '~
BPECIAL TOWN MEETING:
The board discussed the petition of Philip Miller for a special town meeting
relative to the purchase of some land a% the towninfirm-~y. Mr. Coffinfelt
~hat the board should ask Mr. Miller to purchase the land a~ the rear of this
parcel he has in mind as it would have very little value ~o anyone. The
board voted to request that Mr.~iller attend .the next meeting and .this article
will be discussed.
PUBLICHEARING~
The board will attend the publichearLng to be held on May 17, 19~6 at the Public
Works Building, 100 Nashua Street at 2:30 P.M. with respect ~o establishing
speed limits on Route 12~, State Highway in North Andover. Ail interested
organizations have been notified~
WIRING INSPECTOR:
Mr. Lebel came before the board and 'presented a. set of. Wire Inspection By-
Laws which should be ad~pted by the Town and he asked .that they be inserted
in the warrant of the special town meeting to be held in the near future.
The article was approved by the Selectmen after a few adjustments had been
made in the wording of the by-laws~ and will be inserted as an article .in
the w~rrentc~ the next town meeting.
FLAG POLE:
The Board discussed the ~lag pole in front of the ~own building and Mr.
Maker said the committee had recently~ discussed this matter and could arrive
a~ no solution. Mr. Finneran suggested that we leave it as it stands and
have the flag up on holidays or any special days. Mr. Coffin suggested that
they try a small ca~le wire which would hold the flag in place and Mr. Maker
will ou~ much this will cost.
