RESIGNATION-BOARD OF APPEALS:
The resignation of John Alter as a member of the Board of Appeals and
chairman of same board was received due to cirsumstancee beyond his control.
The board discussed this matter and voted to contact Mr. Alter and ask
that the effective date be at such time as any pending matters before the
board are complete.and that the resignation be accepted with regret and a
letter of appreciation be sent to ~.~r. Alter at a later date.
PURCHASE OF DESKS AND CHAIRS-CENTER SCHOOL:
Father Shea ~ave a check to the Town for $20.00 which was the price quoted
by the Selectmen for the desks and chairs in the Center School which will
no longer be used by the School Committee. Check turned over to the Town
Treasurer.

%?ulter Hamilton came before the board to discuss testing tank ~rucks in the
town which haven't been. tested for two years. He stated that he has tried to
make arrangements to have these tests made but has been unsuccessful.
Mr. Finneran felt tha~ the smaller towns would be taken care of in due time
and that no harm would result.
Mr. Thomson suggested that Mr. Hamilton reques~ of the State Director what
arrangements can be made and he will then be complying with Chapter 93, Section
46.
PLANNING BOARD-MAPS:
Peter Ritchie, chairman of this board came befor~ the board to discuss the
matter of ordering zoning maps and stated that with all the changes recently
made it would~ be necessary to have all the maps showing these Changes in
order to bring them up to date. He stated that he did not think there would
be sufficient money' to take care of this project.
Mr. Thomson suggested that he contact Ralph Brasseur and see what the qost
would be and then discuss the .matter again mith this board.
LA~RENCE GAS & ELECTRIC COMPANY:
The board voted :o request four street lights (1000 lumen) on Salem ~tr~et,
pole #2466; Boxford Street, pole #2473, Foster Street, pole #2925 and on
Foster at Winter St. on pole #23/41. These lights were requested same ~time
ago by'residents of this area and they were willing to withold their request
until the fall of this year.
REVOLVER PERI~ITS:
The following application for permits to carry revolvers were approved by
the board by unanimous vote:

DEPARTMENT DF PUBLIC HEALTH:
Copy 'of a letter to the Board of hAblic ~orks relative ~o the location' of
a trailer lunch wagon on Gre~t. Pond'Road between~ Lake Cochichewick and Rea's
Pond, a tributary %o Lake Cochichewick. The location has been considered and
ex-m~nation shoes that there are no toilet facilities at or near the proposed
location for this lunch wagon. It is undesirable to encourage large numbers
of people to frequent this vicinity of public w~ter supply and the Department
knows of no law under which the location of such a lunch wagon may be prevented,
except by a zoning ordinance or by local licensing authority but the .Department
does not recommend such activity on a watershed area. No action taken.
SALE OF INFIR~.~RY LAND TO PHILIP MIL~ER.
Copy of the deed and planer the land which was sold to Phillip }liller was
received from C.J. Mahoney with suggestion that for future purposes they
be placed on file in the Selectmen's cabinet..
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS:
Copy of contract F12507 covering ~work to be done in this town under provisions
of Section 34, Chapter 90 of the Gert.Laws, Ter. Ed. was received, signed by
the Commissioners and by the Selectmen. W~rk has already been started.
STEVENS HALL: ....
Permission granted to the Essex County Voiture, 633, 20/8 American Legion
to use this hall on September 16, 1950 for their annual installation and banquet.
Permission granted to the ~ 'Nariners for use of the haL1 on September 20,'1950
in addition to other dates recently granted.

HIGHWAY SURVEYOR. Article 77.
Under da:e of August 29, the Selec:men delegated to the highway surveyor,
the matter of laying out adequate drainage systems for Hamilton and Holbrook
Roads. Within six 1months aEte~cbompte.tion of the improvements ~o be done
by. the Highway Department the Selectmen will determine the value of such benefits
to the lmud within the affected area and shall assess upon each parcel thereof
a proportionate share of .the cost of such improvemen~v The Board willerpect
to be,notified of the exac~ cost of this project and a plan' identifying this
area and indicating Just what has been done.
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS:
Letter under.date,of August 21, received relative ~o the extension of a
sidwqalk from Main St.. to Pleasant St. The District Traffic Engineer made
a study of the location and reports that it would Seem that the children going
to and from school might follow one of the connecting roadways betwemn Pleasant
and Main Stree~ and one crossing where there are now lights at.Main Stree~
would be used ra%her than find it necessary ara later date to install .a light
at the intersection of Chickering Road and Pleasan~ St. thereby interrupting
traffic in two instances a~ very close intervals.
The board acknowledged the letter and inquired if the wo~ cou/~' ~started
at once and completed by September 16, 1950.

PETITION FOR TREE REMOVAL:
Alcide Gravel, 12 Suffolk-$~reet, has requested the removal of one l~ree
at the above 'address.: Hearing has been se~ ~for October 2, 1~O,~ at 7:30
P.M.
Hearing was he2den the petition of ~ul~er~Bishop,~ ~Lyman Road" "for. the re-
moval of seven trees. There was no opposition aad~it, was ~unasimously voted
to instruct the Tree Warden to remove these seven .trees.

A sur~ey was made in the vicinity of the. new. Veterans, Housing Development
and the following recommendation was made: ~nstallatien of six 2~00 lumen
lights, one on pole 2§71-Patriot $~.; pole 346~-Francis $~.~;~ one on pole
3493-Francis & .Baldwin .ets.; one on pole 349~-Oilb~rt & Baldwin Sts.;. one
half.wmy down Gilbert. St. and one at.corner .of Gilbert & Patriot Sts...Latter
two locations will require new poles. Also recommended tha~ the 1000 lumen
light on pole '4~l.on'Railr0ad Ave. be increased to 2500 lumens. Cost ~o the
t~wn would be $1?8/yr; for this lighting.. Board voted ~o accept this recom- -
mendation contained in the letter, under date of 9/13/1~O.

Nikolay Hetmen,~ 22 Spruce Street, has completed a new home at ~6 Chadwick Street
and would like to have a telephone pole removed as it is in the middle ef the
driveway,~ making it impossible, for him .to use his garage. He wms advised by
Tel~ Co. to make a request to this Board. Board voted to write to the Tel. Co.
requesting them to remove this pole, if possible.
RESERVE POLIOE~
Russell Donnelly, reserve police officer, has been recalled to the Navy as of
~/23/~0, .and has requested that his name be.kept on the active .list~ for any.
appointment that may come up while he ~is in the service.

Letter of resignation from the Board of Appeals. as chairman, received from
John Alter, effective on 9/1§/~0. Board regretfully accepted Mr. Altar's
resignation and eXtended deep appreciation for the service rendered.
