HomeMy WebLinkAbout1951-03-05 Board of Selectmen MinutesFEBRUARY 26, 1951 :-continued Mr. Coffin asked what would happen if between now and March 13, 1951, the date of the hearing, if McKee should go ahead with his plans and star~ a funeral parlor. He asked if we should not issue a warning to the Building Inspector mo take no action until the case is decided by the Court. Mr. Thomson then said he would rather have this by stipulation;until a determination is made it is a valid order of the town. Mr. Mahoney suggested.that we get a stipulation and~plained that this is an agreement that no action will be taken until the case is complete. Such an agreement would be between McKee, the Selectmen and the Salisbury group, which actually means suspension ' of activity. Mr. Coffin said that as he ~hougflt this over the Town meeting has voted this thing regardless of individual thinking. Since there is action against the sovereign will of the people we should act accordingly but said he was net interested in making a big defense. Mr. Mahuney said that the va~idity of the town meeting was questioned and Mr. Co,fin felt that the outcome of this would be a precendent for the future. Mr. Coffin also believed that McKee should hire counsel and pay all ex, eases. He said t.hat in fairness :o McKee he should be allowed to be in on this court session. Mr. Mahoney then stated that he believed that the Ceurt-would grant permission to McKee.to come in and that his.rights should be protected; Mr. Coffin then said he was thoroughly convinced that we need counsel to represent the Selectmen and the Town Clerk and Building Inspector. Mr. Mahoney will ac~ as counsel for thetown officials. MARCH 5, 1951: The regular weekly meeting of the Board of Selectmen.was held a~ ? :00 P.M. with all members present. Weekly bills and payrolls were approved. STREET LIGHT REQUEST:. Mrs. William S. Wilson, ~ Bay State Road requested a street l~.ght on Pole $3533 · Bay State Road as the nearest light is 125 feem from her home and is located on Mass. Ave. The board toted to view this location~ before 'tm~ing action. LAWRENCE G & E CO: Notice received that a 2500 lumen stree~ light has been installed on pole#6§9 Main St. at Wright's residence~ and a 1000 lumen light was removed from this pole on February 21,1951. JUROR: Mr. Finneran deew the name of James Gillespie, 4 E. Water Street, operator =o serve as a juror at Salem Superior Court on April 2, 1951. PRECINCT OFFICERS PAY: The board discussed the matter of salary for the men who se~ up the booths for ~oting and Mr. Lyons had made inquiries as ~o 'the amount to be paid to the firemen whoset up booths. At presen~ they are receiving $14.00 which is ~divided between the seven men. The board agreed that they would not allow any mere than the $1~.CO for the firemen% as t~.ey are getting more than the other men who will receive $12.OO each. BOAP~ OF ~LiC WORKS:. Letter received to call attention to the fact th'at a full and complete report of the re.cetp~s end _expenditures of the Board of Public Works for the-year 1950 was presented to this board, throught the Town Accountant on 1/22/1951. Such reports have been made each year since 1906. DEPART~.NT OF EDUCATION: Application.approved for the following pupil to attend t~e Beaten Trade School: Harry Beckwith, 39 Park St. Baking, 1/1/1951. MARCH ~2, 1951: The regular weekly meeting of the Board ~f Selectmen was held on this day at ? :CO P.M. with Member Thomson, absent. Weekly bills and payrolls were approved. A3~ERICAN LEGION PAPER' DRIVE: Charles Ward came before the board and asked for permission to hold a paper drive for the American Legion on March 18,1951. The board vote.d unanimously to gran~ this request. SALARY DISCUSSION: John Willis came before the board with respect ~o the increase recommended ,~ the Advisory Board. He said itwas his impression that the Selectmen insisted on a meeting with Department Heads and the Advisory Board and that only three members showed up from the Advisory Board.
