Weekly bills and payrolls were approved. ,RESERVE OFFICER: Notification received from Russell Domnelly that he had been honorably ~discharged from the U.S. Navy as of August 14, 19el and is now available for Police duty. The board voted to notify Civil Service of this notice. . ¢IVZL SERVICE- INTERMITTENT POLICE OFFICERS: At the suggestion of Chief McKee the Board voted unanimouslyto request a renewal or a continuance of the approval of the appoSntments (provisional) of the following t~mporarypatrolmen, whose appointments expire on 9/22/51 'and who are to be employed only when the permanent R~serves are mot available: John Donevan 283 Middlesex Street Timothy McCarthy Myron B.Lewis, Jr. Ralph J. Bolderson Augustine .Waish Alexander Ness- Frank Howard 86 Main Stree; 46 Pleasant Street 12 Harold Street 27: Chadwick Street 11 Dewey Street 17 Union Street. POLICE DEPARTMENT: Chief McKee notified the board that Walter Stamp, special officer, is willing to give his time to check on out of to~n peoplewho fish at Lake Cochlchewickwithont a license. H~ spends most of his evenings there and is willing to do this without' charge. Chief McKee thinks:this might be more effective than having his regular officers check only on occasion and people from out of town would soon realize that ~ they are not allowed to fish in Lake Cochichewick. The board agreed with the chief a bent this with the understanding that Mr. Stamp would be subject to supervision of the chief. Chief McKee will be so notified. POLICE CHIEF: Mr.~Thomson brought .up the matter of the recent Monfet murder and said he felt that a~wexq of commendation for Chief McKee for solving~tbe Monfet murder should be made by the board. He sta~ed that District Attorney Cregg had informed .him that the chief had been very helpful and had spent considerable time on this case and that he felt that he did a very fine piece of work. Mr...Finneransaid he had heard a greatc~al about thefime'.work done by the-chief and he would go along with a word of commendation for him. Mr; Ooffin said. he.would go ulongwith this and also-some commendation for the ~" District Attorney and the other officials who participated in this.work. Mr. Thomson then said 'that he thought that more than a few words of 'commendation for :the chief was in order but if the board wanted to'wait untLI the-completion of. the case they would discuss it at that time.' Th~ board so voted. .TREE REMOVALHEARING: ' ' A hearingwas: held at 7:JG P.M. on the petition of Demonic Vermile, 62~Saunders Street for~the~removal ofatree infront of his property. Mr. John Conhors, tree warden, was present and stated that the tree should be removed as it is allover :the house and makes it damp anddark. The board votedunanimously to grant this request~ and so notify the tree warden. .TREE~OVA~REQUEST: A. secoud request for the removal of a tree t o be removed was received from Peter Eargin, 281 Sutton Street. The roots interfere with the sewer pipes and .he has had to call the Public Works Dept. on several occasians~ to cleanout the pipes .'and 'it it expensive. Mr. Connors":talked with him.so~e weeks, ago about this tree and suggested trying Copper Sulphate Crystals in. the pipes and see if it would clear up the trouble. Mr.:Kurgi~agreed'to try these!crystals but it was not e~ffective s~d now he would 'like. the':tree'removed.. The Board voted unanimously to refer this matter ~o the tree warden for such further action as may be necessary. Mr. Connors~iill check this matter and if necessary,will post the tree for a hearing on'September 10, !AWRENCE GAS&ELECTRZ¢ CO:' Permission requested to excavate to install gas service f~ Maude I. Bulmer Pleasant and Princeton Street, for a distance cf 13feet on Princeton Street. The board voted unanimeuslyt'to granttthis request and Mr. Cartywill be notified. ' DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC UTALITIES: Notice received relative to petition of the B & M Railroadfor permission to increase commutation ticke~s and other items 66 2/3 % and the date of hearing is September 4, 19~1 at 'the State House. After some discussion a~ong the board members, Mr. Finneran m~Ae a motion that the board contact them and oppose this increase. Mr. Coffin Suggested that the board write to. the Public Utilities and sugges~ that no increase be granted if it is not agreeable ~o the Department. PRECINCT OFFICERS: The Board met with the town clerk and board of registrars to discuss the-precinct officers and 'the matter of substituting new names due to failure of the previous officers to show up when needed. There was .a list of n~es recommended by the various wardens and a list of other names made up by the board. Mr. Thomson felt that the only question ~ras whether the board would accep: the list as presented or use some names already available. He then thanked the re~strars for coming in and stated that the board would discuss the various names amd complete the list. ~he board then went over the various names submitted amd voted to replace the persons. checked off by the wardens and a complete list is available .in the Selectmsn,s file under Precinct Officers. NEW BOOT~S-VOTING: The registrars discussed~the matter of· new bo~hs' amd~Mr. Cronin explained that they had hoped to be able to purchase eight new ones this year from their appropriation but due to increase prices on printing they have only $2?.00 left and they would need aver $100. There was a suggestion that the lumber could be purchased and have the firemen make the booths. Mr. Lyons then stated that he will get some figures on the cost of materials, etc. .and report to the board. Mr. Thomson said that perhaps a transfer could be the Reeserve Fund later in the ,year and if not, the cost could be figured in their appropriation next year. CH~T~ 90: ' ' A petition covering the requirements of Chapter 90 cons~runtion contemplated on Great Pond Road was received and signed by the board. Petition will be returned to the County'Commissieners with a check for $5.00 which is the cost of the fLlin~ fee and is made out to Archie N. Frost, Clerk. Form returned on 8/27/1951. D~PART~T OF PUBLIC WORKS: . Copy'of c autract ~13076 covering work to be done in this town this year under the provisions of Section 34, Chapter 90 of the Gert.Laws, Ter. Ed.. covering the following sections of road: Boxford Street, 9550 ft. Main Street, 1932 ft. Salem Street, 7400 Sutton Street, 6630 feet, 'and Peters Street, 1294 ftC% total 26,806:feet. Weekly bills and payrolls were approved. · TREEREMOVAL HEAP, TNG: A hearingwas held at 7:30 P.M. on the petitionof Peter Kurgin, 281 Suttons Street for the-removal of a large elm tree. Mr. Kurgin was present and told the board that he has had the Public ~¥'orks Departmen~ up a number of times to t'ake care of the pipes as the sewer backs up and they can't use their bathroom. He said that Mr. Conners talked with him and SUggested trying copper sulphate crystals before removing the ~ree and this was tried but it was not successful. Miss Ella' Taylor who owns the adJoinL~g~p~operty was presen~ 'and said. she was opposed'. to the ~moval of this tree. She said part' of it is on her property and there is a spike in 'the tree to show the boundary line. She thought a part of it may extend on ~own property. OVer
