to take care of the expense of repairing damage to the Fire Alarm system by
ice storms last spring. This had been disucssed at the time of the damage by

approval,
FIRE ENGINEER~:
T~e Board of Fire Engineers, Edwin Kocntg, Calvin Snell and Chief James Hargreaves
met with the Selectmen to discuss the possible use of the old Center' School as a
fire station.
-]~in Koenig looked at the school and suggested that the first thing 'to do would
- be to get an estimate of the cost of renovating the building.
Mr; Willis asked what they thought of the idea of having' a fire station in the
Center and what about going ~n~o the Center school from Milk Street ~and 'starting
a~. ~auxiliary station.
Mr. Hargreaves said that if another statio~ is Started they w0ul'd have to have
the 'proper equipment and number cf men and it costs $700 for a spare driver.
He said he didn't think it would be feasible ~o have a $700 a year men there. '
-He felt that the trouble would be in Obtaining manrpower.' He mentioned that he
w6uld prefer to see a station further out and the Tarmsrs would be willing to do
.'the work. Mr. Willis~ thought~ this' ~as a good sugg.estion,
Mr. Willis ms~tioned appointing a committee Of ~es~dente from the Center and discus
this ma~er with them and perhaps they would have' Suggestfons as to persons who
'migh~ be available for this work. ' '-
Mr. Eirk felt that it would cost more to chan~e this building over than 'it would to
have a new building.
Mr. Hargreaves'-felt that it ~ould cost over $10,000 to renovate this school and
Mr. Kirk said he would say about the same figure. The chief suggested a station
near Foster Street and al'l of' the coun~r~ would be' covered and they could have
a 500 gallon pump on the Ford truck~
Mr~ ~fillis said that if there Was a f~rm fire, there is no immediate-rush for
men.. 'If a barn starts to burn, then nothing'~can sare~it. If there is'a forest
fire there is 'no immedia?e ,rush but 'for a house fire~ there would' be need of
imm?dints attsntien~ Mr.. Willis said he has 'no~~ completely set his mind against
th Center School being used for, this purpose.. He feI,t that, if the people knew
about this pr,$Oect the men would come forward. ~ He ,asked. the' e~gineere if they.
'th'0ught'.the'~,to~n was ready for' a new s~atio~ a~ this time.' Mr. HargreaVes ,and ,Mr.
Snell both felt that the town was ready. ' .......
"Mr. Willis Said 'the nex~ step, would be to borrow th~ tal~nt~'~f sOmebody/And che~
the building. He told the engineers he appreciated their coming in and, hoped they.
would think about this project ,and if they can' solve any of the problems brought
out ~tenight' to let the Bolectmen ~nO.w. ' ~ ·

Mr.~.W~]],is e~plained that at..the -last meeting Mr, Kirk was not inl'favor of allowing
a school building.to be used for self-entertainment and where most likely there
would be liquor, and Mr. Willis went along with this thought so the matter was
, tabled~ until ~onight so that' the full board c0~ld' discuss the matter.
Mr. Thorns'on-inquired if the purpose was solely for 'members and guests or if any ~
funds'/ were~ to be used fc~ charitable purposes. -
Mr.~ ~Kirk-.said.it was-not a fund raising affair and was '~ust a party for the members
and their guests. - -

building but Be~would like ~o know more about it.~
