House on foundation.
MASSACHUSETTS AVENUE SIDEWALKS:
Chairman W. A. Finneran stated that progress had been made in the town ts request to the State for
installation of sidewalks along Mass. Avenue. The Request was made because of the new elementary
school. DPW John Popplewnll stated that forms were .being sent to the town on which the highway
department would be asked to guarantee maintenance of the sidewalks once installed. FoLlowing re-
turn of these forms, the state will lay out plans for the sidewalks, and if sufficient money is
available they will be installed. In the event of insufficient funds, Finneran quoted the offi
as saying gravel~,walks would be put in place, and the town would be asked to provide hot top for
them.
State permission for entrance to the school along Phillips Brooks road from Mass. Ave. was
lng and dependent upon receipt by the .stat6oof plans from the school architect, Frank Crimp, who
has been instructed to send plans to the state. ~he plans were overdue, Finneran added.
HIGHWAY DEPARtMeNT HILL:
A bill for repairs to a highway department truck, payment for which had been held up since Aug.
was approved for payment Monday by majority vote of the Board of Selectmen with Fred 0akes opposed.
Mr. Oakes, opposed for the apparent excessive charges, stated considering the actual value of the
truck and his knowledge of automotive matters led him to sense ~that costs of repairing a ~ransfer
case should not re~h. the total represented by the billing. Mr Oakes spent considerable time and
effort, and in his report to the Board, presented estimates obtained from three other local garages
who submitted totals of $484.22, $474.62 and $427.46 in comparison to the highway ~department bill
in the amount of $72P .50. He cited instances of money wasted by the highway department in pur-
chasing equipment that could have been bought for considerable less .money and stated the excessive
maintenance spending could be blamed on. faulty~hway department, admi~is~ration. We stated once
more his opinion that it is an imperative need for the ~town-to'~avelitS .'own maintenance and repair
department. Mr. Oakes full report was filed in the town recoz~s.'amd'~.'6an be obtained at any time.
