BOOSTER CLUB DINNER:
The Board received invitation to attend annual Booster Club dinner, Sa~. night, 1/21/66
Chairman Fred P. Oakeswfll attend.
SIDEWALK R~UEST:
Mrs. E. Stone, Heri~ge.~Green Apts. requested sidewalks be installed from Village Green
apartments and Heritage Green Apts. to eliviate danger to children walking in busy,
traffic-filled road from said apartments to the elementary and high schools. The
Board voted to write to the state re~uesting same.
LA~CE DUEP:
· A s4rious problem existing over a peri~ of ten years re the Lawrence Dump blowing,
soot and debris over homes in North Andover was before the Board again due to numerous
complaints from said residents. Letters sent Alderman McCarthy in the past have re-
mn4~ed unanswered and the Board voted to set up another meeting with him for next
Wednesda?, January 25, 1967, at 1:00 P.M. The Board will go -to Lawrence City. Hall.

The Board voted to request state DP~ ~o instal 1 Stop signs at the corner of Andnver'~
S~reet and Great Pond Road, a dangerous intersection. Chief Lawlor will be asked-for.

The Board of Selectmen held their me~ting on this 'date with all members present:
~S~lectmen Finneran, Finck and Chairman 0akes presiding. It was held in the Fire Rooms~·i
LAWRENCE DUMP and
LEAGUE OF WC~N VOTERS, about 20 members attended the meeting together ·with 7 or
~8 ~esidants of Sutton Street~ The Sutton Street residents .presented a petition
of ': complaint re the old Lawrence Dump soot problem. Nartha He~e, on bohr1 f of
the r~sidents of Sutton St. and Thorndi~e Road~ presented a letter of protest ~of
the smoke ~and soot that seemed "to~ be getting worse instead of-better." They ~asked if
som?thing~couldn't be done about it.
The Board had a'~.eady scheduled a meeting on Wednesday, January 26th, with Alderman
NcCarthyl at the Lawrence City Hall to see what progress he had made, if any, ~te ~w~rds
solving~this p~oblem. They so advised the residents.
Representative Hurrell attended the meeting and advised that he had filed an inc ~in-
orator bill which would entail state and federal aid to update public incinerators.
He stated that the Lawrence incinerator was outmoded and outdated and that it would
cost 3/4 to 1½ million dollars to install a new one end financial aid could help.
S'electman Ralph E. Finck stated that his investigations showed that 2 shifts a~e'~orkiE
to put b ack a-fire wall that might help the situation. He definitely agreed that
~tats and federal aid should be obtained.
Mr. Krnschet also complained that Methuen residents would soon be complaining about the
smoke the North Andover dump was sending out. He also said the road leading to the
dump was in very poor condition, that only a truck could travel it during the rainy
season.
ChsirmanOakes replied that signs had been posted that no trash burning was permitted
and that the dump gate was closed at certain periods} however~ people, seeing the dum~
gate closed Just threw their debris on the outside of the £ance. Fill has been put in
and a fire hose installed to put out any offemsive fires.
The League of Women Voters seem to enjoy the rather lengthy and diversified agenda and
asked many intelligent, interested questions. They were served coffe and dom~Hnuts by
Mrs. Letarte, the Selectmen's Seeretary~after the meeting. . ·
