The Board of Selectmen men an 7:30 P.M. for their regular weekly meeting.

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS:
A letter was recei~d from this Department stating that they ~ull discuss the
problems of the various communities with reference ko the final location of the
proposed Auto Route 28 relocation. ~he letter farther stated that it is antici-
pated that a further confenence might be arranged either late in November or
early in December. The Joint group will be con~ac~ed as soon as it can be
determined when the necessary data will be available.
DEPART~ENT OF LABOR AND INDUS~IES:
RetaLl price index of Specific Goods and Services in large Massachusents cities
for the periof Mid-Sept. to Mid. Oct. 1954 was received by the board.
CIVIL DEFENSE:
Confirming an oral resignation presented by Arthur Kirk, S. Forbes Rockw~ell
s. ubmitted his resignation as Civil Defense Director to become effective as
soon as his successor is appointed. The B~a~,d voted to .acce, p.t t.he r. esignatipn
with regrets and to send a letter ~o Mr. ~ocl~ell than~mng nzm z'or his services
to the ~own.

DIVISION OF CIVIL SERVICE:
A reply was received from T~omas J. Greehan, Director, relative to the increase
in salary~ for' four Reserve ~'Atrolmen from $1.59 to $1.$4 per hour and requesting
the effective date of this increase. The board had decided than this would be
effective on,~0ctober 25, 1954 if approved by Civil Service and they were so
notified. The four officers are Ronald F. Heggar~y, Paul U. Lafond, Leo Macklin
and F~ank H. Dushame.
~ REMOFAL HEARING:
A hearingwas held at ?:30 P.M. on the request of Frank Slipp for the removal
of a tree in front of his proper~y on Pleasann. Street. Mr. Connors, ~mee warden
was present and agreed than the tree should be removed. The board voted unani-
mously no instruct the tree warden to remove this tree.
LUMBEPJ~EN'S MUTUAL COMPANY:-
Notice received that the case of John McDonald (deceased) 66C-6722X) will be
heard before a single member of the Industrial Accident Board on Tuesday, Nov. 9
1954 at 10 A.M. at Superior Court House, 40 Appleton Street, ~:awrence,Mass.
This notice sent ~o give an opportunity ko the board to be present if they wish
to do so. Mr. Maker has been~ notified of this hearing.
JURORS DRAWN:
Two Jurors were drawn to serve at Salem Superior Court on November 29, 1954
for the transactionof criminal business. Mr. Kirk drew the name of Joseph T.
Driver, 508 Main St.- Clerk and William Finnerandrew the name of Eva G. Sharp,
149 Pleasant Street,- housewife.
REQUEST FOR REMOVAL OF A PGLE-GLENWOOD ST.
Joseph Cristeldi, 161 Mass. Ave. came ~o the office to see if the board could
have a pole removed, which is in the middle of the road at Glenwood St. and
Mass. Ave. This ma%~er came before the board some time ago and according to
the records in the minutes, the selectmen approved the petition for removal
of this pole in January of 1953. The Board again voned to request the Lawrence
Electric Company to remove this pole which was approved on the petition which
was acted upon by the Board on January 1~, 1954.
Mr. Barry was contacted by telephone by Mrs. Dearden and informed that this
petition had been approved by the Selectmen on January 18, 1954 and inview of
that approval, he informed Mrs. Dearden that they will relocate the pole at
this location.

lAWRENCE ELECTRIC COMPANY~
The Lawrence Electric Co. recommended the instellation of a 1000 lumen
light on pole No. 106h on Maes. Ave. to illuminate the intersection of
Elmwood Street and Nass. Aves also that the two 1000 lumen lights on
poles 1055 and 1065 be changed to 2500 lumen lights. The cost for these
changes will be $38.00 yearly. T~e Board voted unanimously to go along
with this recommendation.
R~VOLVER PERMIT:
The Board voted unanimously to grant a license to Joseph J. Lynch, Jr.
43 Farber Ave. to carry a revolver pending approvsl of Chief McKee on
this application. Chief McKee later approved the form as required.
S~EET LIGHT CHANGE:
~he Board voted unanimously to go .along with Mr. Frost.s oral request
to change the street light on pole 2818 on Johnson Street to the pole
across the streete

CIVIL DEFENSE DIRECTOR:
Dewey Dyer met with the board to discuss a space which might be allotted
to him for use as a civil defense office. After some discussion the. board
voted unanimously to a~ low. him to, use the court room at one end ,for a
~emPorary period, so that he might were up his, files ~and get started. Mr.
Dyer thought the Cour~ Room ~ould. he ideal for this work.-
He mentioned the old Johnson High School b ut Mr. Kirk said that this building
had not been officially turned over ~o the Selectmen and that it would be heated
only partially so that"the Court Room-would be the better place at ~this time.
Mr. Dyer mentioned that they expect ~o get a generator and with this location
they would be able to take care of the police and Fire s taticu as well as the
town building. .
Mr. Eirk inquired of John Connors.who fills in~ the holes where the- stumps are
removed. Mr. Connors stated that he notifies Mr. Carry,but there is one on
Ac~dem~ Roa. d which, does not bother at, one and he-has, not notifie~' him as yet.
Mr. Kirk wanted to be sure what theprocedure was .as. Mr. Carry had complained
to him this morning about no~ being notified.
Mr. Duffy came before the board to inform them that he was concerned-about the
trees on the Common which have to be removed. ~ He talked with ,Mr. ~ Connors but
he tells you nothing. Mr. Dully said that these are Public'Parks and this work
should be done. There,are trees down at "Becky,s Pond"
Mr. Kirk said the concensus of opinion was that some ~f this work could be left
until later on. Tam board is kind of leery about how much we will receive for
reimbursement on this work. He felt sure that the work would be done eventu,l~y
but they could not give any definite time..
Mr. Duffy said there are nineteen ~rees to be removed. Aslong as it~ is on ~the
record that these' trees will be removed, eventually, that is all that he wanted
tO know.
