The regular weekly meeting of the Board of Selectmen was held at 7:30 P.M. With
all members present. Weekly bills and payrolls were approved.

The Board approved the' petition for permission to locate s pole 'and wires in the
North And~ver Town Yard, e t a point approximatelY 160 feet easterl~ from Main
Street, 1 pole.
SCHOOL BU~I~DING COMMITTEE: ..
A letter informing the board that the School Building Committee voted on May 11,
1955. not to recommend the sale' of the land in,question. This refers to the
petition of certain citizens requesting the sale' of some two acre.s of the high
school site to ~ouis H. Mc&loon for house lots.
NORTH ANDOVER BOOSTERS CLUB:
The Selectmen are invited to attend the opening day~ program oh' Sunday, May 22
at Grogan,s Field. ~he board voted unanimously to accept this in~tation.
TRANSFER OF NAME- DRIVE in THEAtrE LICENSE:
The Board vo~ed unanimously to grant a transfer of the' license held by John and
.. Kastant Shay to be known.as~ "Den RockDrive;in ~heatre, Inc.,- This license
expires-in August, 19~%. '. .
LAND ~OURT:
Notice received that Brooks Potter of North Andover has petitioned to the Land

GREAT POND ROAD- CHAPTER ~- 1954 Funds;
The,Board sent a letter to Mr. ' · that
Raymond El 'Je~kins, at Derivers, requesting
· the present 'contract on Great Pond Road 'being constructed by Martin Mailet, be
extended as far as the existing. 19~4 funds will permit. It is u~derstood that
the contractor is agreeable :o doing this work at the ~id unit prices, provided
the surplus was%e material 'can be disposed of without being hauled .to the town

Notice received that an application has been .filed. for a certificate of incorpora-
tion as provided for in Chapter 180 u~der the name of Essex County 4-N 'Club
: Foundation, !nc. Beatrice N. Poster, Poster St. North' Andover is listed from
.North Andover and there are others, not residents of North' Andover. The' board
referred this to the Police Chief for investigation.

The board received a letter from .Mr. Salisbury advising them that he h~d written

Mr. King.s letter informed the board 'that the negotiations for settlement of the
Land Taking cases on Great Pond Road have reached this status: signed agreements

The County Commissioners want the Selectmen to vote ~o settle .these cases'at the
.... above figures and do not want' the cases to be tried unless the. Selectmen refuse ~o
authorize the-settlements.
Mr. Broadhead made s mo~ion t6 accept the figures of the County Commissioners and
motion was seconded by Mr. Finneran ma~ing it a majority vote with Mr. Kirk voting
no.
CIVI~ SERVICE:
A'letter was received from the DireOtor of Civil Service relative to Eeo Oaleazzi
being employed by the Police Department. The informAtion'is available and the
board voted to authorize Mrs. Dearden to s~d the required information to the
Division of Civil Service.
BOARD OF FIRE ENGINEERS:
'Notice received that Chief James p. Daw has inspected the "Sprinkler System.
in the Town Building and found it to be in good working order. The "Sprinkler
~larms on the side of the building and in the Fire station function properly.

Notice of the annual inspection of Highway Grade Crossings hadJust been completed
indicating that Approach Warning Sign Discs maintained .by the town should have attention
tc correct conditions as follows:
,~utton Street, one sign missing and one in poor condition
Ashland St. one sign in poor condition, Rtverview St. one in poor condition, North
Nain St. one in poor condition and on Osgood St. one sign missing.
The Board voted to refer this matter to the Highway and Poll. ce Depa~ment.
J. P. STEVENS & CO. INC.
A letter regarding the trucks using Prescott Street in the late afternoon and early
morning hours was received from E. C. McCabe, Traffic Dept. He states that. they have
notified their Trucking Co. in Greensboro and this situation should be remedied im-
mediately.

Hugh Stewart, 62 Elm St. requesrm one side parking on Cross Street, It is very inconven-
iant at time and impossible at ether times to enter his garage.
A'public hearing will be held on this request on June 13, 1955 a~ 7:30 P.M.
RECREATIONAL COUNCIL:
A letter was received from 'Mrs. Elizabeth Elliot-relative to the money to be
transferred from the'Preserve Fund to the Recreational Council expense appropriation.
The Board voted not to take any action on Mrs. Elli~t.s request to increase the
amount from $400 to $500 9attI they talk with the chairman and Mrs. ELliot. They
voted =o invite them in on May 23,~ 1955 at 7:45 P.M.
DRAINAGE E~EMENT- ~HE SOCIETY OF JESUS OF NE~ 'ENGLAND:
Mr. Salisbury informed the board that the document "Drainage easement from The Society
~ of Jesus of New England has been duly recorded at the Lawrence Registry of Deeds,

5 Dana Street to install gas service. Mr. Carry will be notified of this excavation.

Mr. Finneran informed the board that on June 12, the first annual road race of the
South Broadway. Veterans will be conducted a~ 2~5 P.M. and will go along Salem Turnpike
Street from Winthrop Ave ~o Wilsun,s Corner and' onElm St. to Andover. All plans have
been made and they could not be changed but Mr. Fi~noran was advised that they would
be in North Andover only a short time, and will not interfere with the Centennial Parade~
REQUEST FOR CHANGE IN S~REE~NAME:
Robert Campbell requests that the Selectmen change the name of Farnum ~nd to Farnum
Street from Berry Street ~o Salem Street. A hearing will be held on this request on
June 13, 1955 at &;30 P.M. and this will advertised.
SICK LEAVE- CHAPTER hi-sECTIoN ill H.
The Board discussed sick leave as voted at the Spe6ial Town Meeting held 'on April 27,
1955 with the various departmen~ h~ads present. Mr. Maker, town treasurer, felt tha~
more information should be obtained before an~ decision is made by the board. ~hey
voted :o request that he go to Boston to talk this over with Mr..Dine and report back
to the Selectmen. Ail present agreed that this was the best solution. Mr. Maker also
.questioned whether or no: the police and firemen would he included in this chapter,
and he will check on that also.
A letter was received from the Police Relief Association together with a list of towns
