HomeMy WebLinkAbout1956-11-09 ..... 255 NOV~{BER 9, 1926: The Board of Selectmen met at ~:00 P.M. to sign payrolls and approve bills for next week, due to the holiday on November 12 next. FORREST SMITH -re BD. OF PUBLIC WORKS Forrest Smith came before the board and Mr. Finneran read the letterto him which we received from the Board of Public Works. Mr. Kirk informed Mr. Smith that he should go before the Board of Public Works and cite his case as the Selectmen have nothing to do with the problem and have no Jurisdiction over the Board of Public Works. Mr. Smith asked if he might have a copy of the letter from Mr. Duffy and the board agreed to this request. He will go before the Board of Public works at a later date and see if he can get some satisfaction. FIRE ENGINEERS: The Board of Fire Engineers met with the board to discuss the ,,firing,, of one member of the C~1 firemen. Mr. Ftnneran s aid he had no concern about the firing of this man but in the manner in which it was done. They felt that the Engineers knew who should be fired and who should 'be kept on the ~partment but there has been considerable discussion as to how this m~u~as fired. Mr. Finneran suggested that in the future they use a little more diplomancy so that there will be no come-back. Chief Daw stated that he had warned the men that they would be fired if they didn't show up for drills. He showed the board the frill forms and also stated that on provisional appointments no hearing is required in accordance with Civil Service rules and regulations; you Just fire the man. All members of the board agreed that the Engineers should do what they see fit but they also suggested that they should use a Little more tact so that there will be no opportunity-for anyone to find fault with the Department. &il agreed ~th~t we have a fine department and they would Like to keepit 'so. The Engineers agreed to consider this request in the future, as they too feel that there should be no reports detrimental to the Department. ' ' NOVEW~w.R~ 19, 1956: The 'regular week~ meetingof the Board of Selectmen was held at 7:30 P.M. with 'all members present. Weekly b~ ~ 1.~ and payrolls were approved. ~ P~V/~OVAL HEARING': .A hearing,s held on the request of William P. Rockwell for the removal of a tree on Water Street near 01arendon Street. The Board voted lm-uimously the tree warden to remove this tree. GASOLINE STORAGE HEARING: A hearing was held on the application of the Oyr Oil Oem~any for a license to store an additional 8,000 gallons of gasoline at 1046 Osgood Street, Lakeside F~l 1 img station. W~lliam B. Dufl~ and members of the' Board of Public Works appeared at the hearing. Mr. Dully stated that this-station is very close to the lake and is about 200' from the high water mark and 700' from the new pumping station. He said there il is some sewerage at the pumping station and is so situation that~ it is away from the lake. The filling statiom is at a much higher elevation and if the tanks should leak it would ruin the water. Mr. Sullivan mentioned that there is also a chance of used oil leaking into the lake. He said if this is to be a super station the dewerage disposal is a serious problem. George Caron, representing the Board of Health informed the board that Mr. Colgate should get a permit for the septic tank and there is a~ bad situation there. Mr. Duf~ went on to s~v that this s tation has been there ~ good mar~ years but they never did much business and the town has Just spent $300,000 to take care of the new industry in town. George Coogan, from the State~ Dept. of Public Health said they were concerned about any polluting material, gas, oil or anything which would have an~ effect on the warner. He has known of tanks that have leaked in the past and has seeped through the ground and into sewers. It could happen at this ~tatton. Their department dSes not. like to see anything erected on a water shed which would create hazard or pollution. The tank could be put into a concrete basin and there is also the possibility of this leaking. Mr. Coogan said he had never seen a f~ll~ug station so close to drinkingwater. George Caren said the local board of Health are taking legal action on this loca- tion and also on the next house with respect to sewerage. Mr. Duffy said that the station had been there a long time and nothing can be done about that but they do object to additional storage of gasoline. Mr. Vance Petersen, representative of the Western Electric Compan state~ that they are reluctant to mix in Town Affairs but they expect to have additional employees and they felt they should express an opinion to the Selectmen and object to additional storage of gasoline at this location.
