~lso stated he would be unable to attend the hearing on the matter at Salem, and read
the letter he intended to send to the Commissioners with his Selectmen colleagues.
This letter expressed Mr. Finnerans favor of home rule, and asked the Commissioners
to defer a decision until such time as the townspeople cou~ be heard. Atty. WilLis
pressed the Board for a decision on the matter. Mr. Sutcliffe moved that the Board
keep the crossing open, but there was no seconding motion forthcoming.
WESTERN ELECTRIC STORAGE
A petition to store inflammable materials at the Western Electric Compam~r plaut
was approved by the Board at a hearing on the matter. License for said materials
will be issued on this date.
Rigazzio CLAIM
Mr. Rigazio appeered before the Board in defense of his claim for damage to his
tire on Sutton Street caused by an unprotected raised manhole. Mr. Finck Stated the
Board would deliberate on the matter and let Mm. Rigazio ~now.

A petition for Joint pole l~cattons by the Merrimack-'Essec Electric Co. and the New
England Tel. & Tel. Co. was received by the Board. A hearing on the matter was set
for September 23, 1957 at 7:30 P.M.
LAWRENCE GAS COMPAN~
Excavation requests from the Lawrence Gas Compass, approved by Mr. Duf~jr, were approved
by the Board of Selectmen.
PROPERTT D~AGE.
Atty. Finck read a copy-letter fron Mr. Duffer to the Police Department reporting
extensive damage to the equipment at the GroEans Field pla~grouzld. T~e Board voted
to advise the Police Department to patrol the playground areas frequent~T in order .
to discourage such wauton destruction.
LAWREnCE DUNP

the Lawrence Dump with an enclosed copy-letter which was sent to Alderman Guilmette
warning the City of Lawrence that the State Department would take legal pro~ee~ure .
if the dump was not operated in a manner that would not create objectionable conditions
Mr. SutclLffe Stated the Board would meet with city of Zawrenee Officials on Wednesds~r
morning for further discussion on the matter
MERRIMACK-ESSEO ELECTRIC
Recommendations from Mr. George Frost, CO. rep., for street lighting on Waverl~r~Rd,
fr~ Turnpike Street to the cemetery were approved by the Board. It was voted to
request a Co. survey on the following requests; Idmcoln Street from Russell St~ to
Pleasant St. Pole ~1610 on Eillside Road.
SECOND STREET
The Board suggested the Boston Office of the Dep't. of Public Works be contacted on
our awaited approval for work on Second Street.. A telephone conversation with
this office verified approval on the matter.
CIVIL DEFENSE
A.Civil Defense Week letter and proclamation was tx~ed over to Mr. Frank Murpby,
news reporter for publication.
D~.PAR~ENT ~DS
The Board set October 7, 1957 as a date for the nest meeting of all dapartmont heads.
This ~meeting wLll be held in the compar~ room of the Fire Station.

The Board of Registrars appeared for their scheduled meeting with the Board of
Selectmau ahd stated the changes made in the voting precincts. These changesmet
with the approval of .the Selectmen and the Board of Registrars were co~aendad
their fine work on the matter.

Atty Finck requested that the ~f~hengr~s to the garage doors be returmed to
this office for disposition. The estimates were given to the Police Department some weeks
ago.
HEATING P!~NT
The Board voted to contact Mr. Label and ask for an estimate on his reco~aended repair
work to the Town Garage heating plant.
JOHNSON HIGH SCHOOL BLDG.
The Board of Selectmen requested that estimates be obtsimed for the boarding.up
of the John son High School .ahendoned building.
MAIN STREET
Mr. Finmeran made a motion that Main Street be lined and parking marked off along the
business area. That one hour parking signs be installed along the business area. The
motion was not seconded as such, but it was agreed that the Police De~nt would line
Main Street and have a police officer patrol the business area for p~rking violations.
~JILDING CODE.
Mr. Nicetta appeared before the Board to state that a revision of the building code
would be received about October 1, 1957/
ZONING
Mr. Finck asked Mr. Nicetta if the zoning was correct for Mr. Schruender,s location
of a Miniature Golf Course. ~. Nicetta stated he would investigate and advise the
Board on this matter. Mr. Nicetta also stated that the mm~andments to the By-Laws
might possibly be read~ for public hearing by October 23, 1957.
CIVIL DEFENSE
The Board directed that Mr. Dyer be contac~d 'to meet with them next Nen~ in
connection with the purchase of surplus supplies.
BROOKS SCHOOL SKATING RINE
Mr. Finnerau reported the R~ooks School skating Rink will be rea~ 'f~r the cold
weather, and suggests the Recreational Council be placed in charge of Town rep-
resentation on this Pm~Ject. It was agreed that the Select~an would insert and
article.for the mea~ special .~mm meeting to cover maintenance or rentml .as the
case may be. Mr. Finneran stated Mr. Dine he~ suggested the bm lease the
skating rink for certaim periods under quarterly p~yments to cover the legal
P~Se .of the matts~. The Board suggested the Recreatian~l Council meet with this.
Board next Men~ at 8:00 P.M. to discuss the situation.
HC~SING FOR THE OLD*AGED
Mr. SutcLtffe made a motion that a progress report be requested from the Housing
Authorit~ on the progress m~e with the establishment of housing for the old-aged.
The .report is requested for next meeting.
Mr. Finneran requested ac~iem on group insurance and made the motion that the contract
be given to Netropolitau .Life Insurance Co. Motion was denied. Mr. Sutcliffe made
a notion that life end accidental death benefite be given to the Prudential Ymsurance
Compaz~ of America, and .that the hospital surgical benefits be given to Blue Cross-
Blue Shield. We Prudential contract to be divided between the ~andsel Agency, Agent
Eatherine Trembly and Agent Ralph Vernile. Atty Finck seconded and it was a maJori~
vote with Mr. Finneran dissanting. Mr. Sutoliffe stated his reasems for this decision
were that the majority ~ town employees were not satisfied with the present set-up
u~der Metropolitan Life. He stated that all cen~ employees were covered by Blue Cross
Blue Shield along with the state employees. There was some discussion on benefits
being what you ps~ for them, and Mr. Finnoran stated he would predict there wasn,t
enough mon~ in the present appropriation to ps~ for this entire coverage.
