HomeMy WebLinkAbout1958-01-13SPEEDING Mr. Finneran mentioned he had received a complaint of speeding on Salem Street from the Center to Su~er Street. The complaint was referred to the Police Dep't. STREET LIGHT REQUESTS Mr. Ftnnerun stated he had requests for street~ lights to be placed at the corner of Hemlock Street, Walnut Avenue and ?ark~r Street. Also at ~hmber 233 South Bradford Street. Mr. Sutcliffe received the latter request. The board directed that the Merrimack-Essex Electric Company be contacted to make a survey on the above requests. BROOKS SCHOOL SKATING RINK Mr. Sutcliffe stated there seemed to be a necessity of some form of transportation for some of the children in town to the Brooks School Skating Rink. Mr. Finck stated the problem of transportation was up to the Recreational Council and the matter was referred to said council for recommendation to the board on Wednesday, January 15, 1958 at 2:30 P.M. The Recreational Council was also asked to appear at next Monday board meeting to discuss the time schedule for available hours in which the townspeople can skate at the rink. BIDS - BOARDING-IN JOHNS~ BIGH SCHOOL BLDG. Bids were received as advertised,ffor the boarding-in of the Johnson High School Building. The board received sixteen bids varying in amounts from the lowest bid of $300.00, to the highest bid of $1595.00. The Selectmen took the matter under advisement and later awarded the contract to Wright Contra cting Company of Needham Mass. for the low bid of $300.00. Mr. Wright promised to submit a certificate of insurance and complete the Job by Friday of this week, weather permitting. REQUEST OFR TAXI LICENSE Mr. Daniel J. Olenio appeared before the board on his first application for a taxi license. Mr. Olenio was advised to contact the Board of Appeals to make certain the Zoning of the area would iD. plude a Taxi Business. STREET LIGHT Mr. Sutcliffe requested that Mr. Frost, Merrimack-Essex Electric Company be called on the matter of a stronger Light for 21-23 Merrimack- Street, North Ando~er. 1~ WAGE Mr. Sutcliffe requested that the Personnel Board be advised to take up the matter of a minimum wage with Ira D. Catty, Highway Surveyor, and advise Mr. Catty that he must pay his employees at least the minimum wage. PLANNING BG~RD Mr. Nicetta, and others of the Planning Board, appeared before the Board of Selectmen to request that they be given permission to engage counsel in the matter of the recent re-sontng of a parcel of land off Turnpike Stree~ which had been rezoned to accomodate the specified business of a Garden Center. It seems that the land has since been resold and there is now ta~k of a shopping center. The Planning Board stated their intention of holding a public hearing in order to rezone the land to its former status. The Selectmen voted ~nan~a~i~yon Mr. Sutcliffe's motion that the Planning Board be allowed to engage Atty. Arnold SaLisbury as legal counsel on this matter. The motion was seconded by Mr. Finck~.an. The Planning Board had stated its preference for Atty. Salisbury on this particular matter. Mr. Finneran opposed the motion stating he would prefer to await the new corporation's intent. APPROPRIATIONS TO BE CARRIED O~ER TO 1958 The Selectmen advised that a letter be sent to the Town Accountant requesting that appropriations for the Brooks Skating Rink and the Town History be carried over into the y~ar 1958. HIGHWAY DEPAR~2~NT The board directed that a letter be sent to Mr. Carry requesZimg that he mee~ with the Selectmen on Wednesday, January 15, 1958 at 2:30 P.M. on the matter of his recent purchase of a new sand-spreader. PGLTCE DEPARTMENT ASSOCIATIC~ Mr. JJohn Lanni appeared before the board to protest the small pay received by the patrolmen at the election polls. Mr. Lanni stated he represented the PoLice Ass- ociation on this matter. The board advised Mr. Lanni that the matter of pay was entirely up to the Board of Registrars. Mr. Lanni stated the Registrars had referred him to the Selectmen. The Selectmen directed a letter be sent to the Board of LRegis- trars advising them that the matter of election pay was entirely up to them, and that if any increase was planned it should be entered into their budget for the year 1958.
