HomeMy WebLinkAbout1958-03-03March 3, 1958 The Board of Selectmen met on this date with all members present and Chairm~n Ralph E. Ftnck presiding. The Weekly Warrant for payrolls and bills payable was approved and signed by all members of the board. ELECTION DAY The annual election to town offices is being held on this date. Etty. Ralph E. Finck, Mr. WilliamA. Finneran andMr. Philip Sutcliffe, incumbent members of this board are seeking re-election. JOHNSON HIGH SCHOOLBUILDING Mr. George Cleaves, sub-contractor to the boarding in of the old Johnson High School building, appeared before the board to inquire about ~he provisions of the contract between the town and Mr. James C. Wright who was awarded the bid and from whom Mr. Cleaves subcontracted the work. Mr. Cleaves was unaware that the Job was was awarded for a bid of $300.00 or that the bid included the covering of wells, or pits. Mr. Cleaves wa.s also concerned with collecting his money for the work he has done as he has learned that Mr. Wright is bankrupt. Mr. Finck suggested Mr. Cleaves see his lawyer on this matter and stated the board would talk to Mr. Wright in the meantime to discuss ~he completion of the Job before payment of the bill. Mr. Cleaves thanked the board for their cooperation. STREET LIGHT A request by Mr. Eugene Pelletier for a street light in front of his residence at 2009 Salem Street was uamnimously referred to the Merrimack-EssexElectric Co. for proper survey and recommendation. The board accepted a notification fromthe Merrimack-Essex Electric Company that requested street lights at the corner of Parker and Hemlock Streets and Wlanut Avenue, and on pole 2659 of Barker Street, had recently been installed. SCHOOL BUS STOP Chairman Finck read a report from the Police Chief relative to a request that the bus stop at Stevens Corner be moved to the opposite side of the street. The report stated the childrens lives would be endangered if this change was made. The board accepted the recommendation from Chief McKee that the school bus stop remain where it is presently located. SELECTNEN"S OFFICE Mr. Sutcliffe made a motion that the Selectmen's Office be closed to all outside boards other tb~n the Personnel Board. He based his motion on the fact that certain ~kticles in desk drawers had been disturbed recently when other boards had made arrangements to meet here of an evening. Mr. Finck ~aid he would be willing to qualify the motion unless ether offices were not available. That many to~*n boards do not have an office in which to mee~ and that this board should cooperate in this respect. Mr. ?inneran stated it has always been the policy of the Board of Selectmen to make this office available to boards not having an office of their own. Mr. Sutcliffe's motion was not carried out. CC~PLAINT Mr. W. W. Broughton, 59 Appleton Street appea~ed before the board ~o protest surface water conditions on his property due, as he stated, to the installation of new poles in the area by the Merrimack-Essex Electric Company. Mr. Brough~on stated the pre- vious bourse of drainage had been disrobed when said company installed these poles. Mr. Finck advised Mr. Broughton that the board would contact the electric company and Highway Surveyor to correct the drainage situation and hope to have a report by next Monday meeting. POLE LOCATION A hearing was set for March 24, 1958 at 7:30 P.M. on the petition of thc Merrimack-Ess4x Electric Compan~and the NewEng!and Tel. & Tel. Co. for the removal of one pole on Chestnut Street and the installation of one pole on Osgood Street. STREET LIGHTING A recommendation from Merrimack-Essex Electric Co. that a 1000 lumen light be in- stalled near the residence of Mr. Eugene J. Pelletier, 2009 Salem Street and that certain tree trimming take place for better lighting was tabled until neet meeting upon the motion of Mr. Sutcliffe that the Tree Warden trim the trees before approving the new street light. Ym. Finneran had previously suggested the board adopt the recommondation and advise Mr. Connors to trim as recommended. Mr. Sutcliffe's motion
