STREET LIGHTING
Recommendations from Merrimack-Essex Electric Company for improved street light-
ing in the vicinity of Russell and Main Streets were tabled by the board until
the area could be inspected. -- The board accepted a letter from Mr. George
Frost in reference to installations near Stevens Mill and the North Andover High
School.
S~O~ BUILDING COMMITTEE - SCHOOL COMMITTEE
Chairman Ftnck read letter from Douglas Chandler, Secretary to the School Build-
ing Committee and School Committee, relating their proposed recommendations to
next Annual Town Meeting in reference to acquisition of additional land to
provide for school building expansion when needed. The three parcels of land
are (1) Town-owned land adjacent to the North Andover High School at rear of
the athletic fields. (2) Town-owned land known as the former Johnson High
School site. (3) The purchase of land adjacent ~o the Franklin School. Mr.
Finck stated the board would study, these proposals and state opinions on the
matter at next meeting.
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC UTILITIES - Boston & Maine Railroad
The board accepted a letter of reply from the Deptof Public Utilities stating
board letter had been placed on file and will be considered when the hearing
~s held on the petition by the Boston and Maine Railroad to curtail certain
tra'~nsservice and station stops.
Chairman Finck read ~otice from Boston & Maine Railroad of D.P.U. hearing
to be held on January 21, 1959 at 10:00 A.M., State House, in respect to the
above matter. R. FLnck stated he would attend this hearing.
EASTERN MASS. ST. RAILWAY
~Cha~rman Ftnck read letter from Representati~e Frar~c S. Giles in reply to board
request for his assistance in ending the present Eastern Mass. St. Railway
strike. Representative Giles stated although not a legislative problem the
matter would be discussed at the December 22 meeting of the Essex County
Legislators Association.
PGLE LOCATION
Upon motion of Mr. Finneran seconded by Mr. Sutc2fffe and voted unanimous, hearing
~s set for January 5, 1959, 7:30 P.M. on petition of Merrimack- Essex Electric
Co. and New England Tel. & Tel. Co. for the location of one pole on Court Street.
SALES TAX QUESTIONAIRE
The Mass. Assoc. of~.eal Estate Boards and the Christian Science Monitor request
information from t~e~Board of Selectmen in respect to a sales tax. Chairman
Finck stated he would fill out the questionaires.
BUDGETS
The Board of Selectmen worked on their budgets and appropriations for the coming
year. Estimates were set on all items under the Jurisdiction of the Selectmen.
NN~ FIRE STATION CC~MITTEE - Report
Fire Engineers Edwin Koentg and Cal~Lu Snell, Fire ~htef Jim Daw, Atty. Harold
Morley, Dana Fischer, and Charles Foster, appeared before the board to report
on their work to date in their study of the necessity for a new fire station
in the ~icinity of the "Old Center". Mr. Brainerd, Architect, ~s introduced
and it was explained thmt ~r. Brainerd and Mr. Foster had donated considerable
time to.the~ drawing of plans for a proposed new Fire Station.Mr. Fisher stated
their sur~ey had shown Chickering Road as the dividing line with a ratio of
6C/40 alarms. 60% of the alarms coming fromtthis side of the line. He stated
an additional station located at the Old Center would show signifacance also as
far as insurance rates to the town are conderned. The ideal location would be
at the triangle at the Old Center on land owned by the Improvement Society.

either side of the building for easy access and egress. R. Finck stated to~n
meeting problem would be the cost. tt was mentioned no additional equipment
would be needed but approximately six new firemen would be necessary. Mr.
Fisher stated perhaps it would be better to acquire the land this year and
plan for building the fello~ng year. It was agreed this may be more accept-
able to Tqwn: Meeting. ~mirman Finck stated the matter whould be discussed with
the Advisory Board. It ~s agreed upon receipt of the written report the
Selectmen would arrange a meeting with the Committe, Advisory Board and Sel-
ectmen. It was also suggested the report be placed in the Annual Town Report.
