Th~.of Selectmen held their regular meeting on this date with all members present;
Selectmen John F. Coady, Thomas J. MeEvoy with Chairman Joseph A. Guthrie, presiding. The
minutes and warran~ wer~ approved, as submitted.
Arthur Roe, 44 Ashland Street, was drawn for Jury duty, at Lawrence, Dec. 6. Helen M. Burke,
9 Chadwick Street and Robert D. Destefane, 55 Furber Ave. were drawn for Jury 'duty, at Salem,
Dec. 6th.
CHIEF DAW: - ·
Letters received from Chief Daw in answer to letters sent by the Selectmen re a complaint ·
brought to the Board from a provisional firefighter who was ncr appointed to be a permanent
fireman. His complaint was that he was not given a valid reason for his non-appointment.
Daw stated that Jacques was uot appointed simply because the Board of Fire Engineers appointed
the ten men considered best qualified for the Department in accordance to the best interests
of the department. Mr. Jacques retains his eligible status on the Civil Service list for two
years. The second letter concerned the former .Veterans Agent office. Chief Daw stated that
the Board of Fire Engineers has total responsibility for and authority over all F ire Dept.
facilities, including building, of mbich the office in question is a totallyenclosed portion.
The Selectmen contend they have Jurisdiction over all municipal buildings; The Board voted
to refer the problem to Town Counsel for a determination.
NO PABKING: MAY STREET:
Letter received from Chief Lawlor stated he had ns objection to have No Parking restriction
on the northerly side of May street, from its intersection with Main Street for
a distance westerly of 160 feet. Restriction lanst be advertised and sent (3 attested copies)
-+~ the Department of Public Works in Danvers for approval of required admendment to the N.A.
rules and regulations of traffic.
JAI~EES RE~JEST-TO~N PICNIC'AREA:
Gene Willis appeared before the Selectmen requesting permission to have 15 ~ownspeople plant
a garden plot next Spring on a section of the Town Farm area, under the Jurisdiction of the
N. A. Jaycees. Jaycees 'would be responsible for the participating people ...they will be re-
quired to sign a release absolving the town of any liability for injury ~tdle wor~ing the town
farm.
Letter from Highway Surveyor in reply to letter' from Narshall Rogers Concerning present landfill
on Holt Road. Mr. Cyr stated that the North East Solid Waste Region has been wor~ing for the
past three years towards a rapid and positive solution to our Solid Waste problem and hopsiktlly
in the near future wthe proposed Resource Recovery Plant will become a reality.
