The purpose of the visit was to observe the existing roof rafters in the area where the proposed solar array is planned to be located. This information was used to determine if the existing rafters have enough reserve capacity to support the new proposed solar array. TLHC performed a structural analysis of the existing roof framing members. The analysis was based on our measurements and observations, the 2009 International Building Code and the Massachusetts Amendment. In addition we used the proposed solar product data provided by Big Sky Renewable Energy LLC. The analysis was conducted on a single story commercial space with two wings. The existing roof rafters for the doctor's office wing are 2x4 wood members spaced at 24" on center; the waiting room wing are 2x6 wood members spaced at 20" on center. It is our opinion 1x6 wood members should be added to the waiting room wing connecting joists to increase stability. See the attached sketch for additional information Based on our review, a new solar array adds approximately 2.1 pounds per square foot (PSP) of additional load to the roof rafters on one side of the roof It is our opinion the existing roof rafters have enough reserve capacity to accommodate the additional loads associated with the new array. The loads we used for analysis were based on the 2009 International Building Code along with the Massachusetts Amendments. The code indicates the ground snow for North Andover, MA is 55 PS F and the wind velocity is I 10 miles per hour. This intbri-nation might be helpful for the array design.
