§912.2.2 Fire alarm detection system. Where a change in occupancy
classification occurs that requires a fire alarm and detection system to be provided
based on the new occupancy in accordance with Chapter 9 of the IBC 2009, such
system shall be provided throughout the area where the change of occupancy
occurs. Existing alarm notification appliances shall be automatically activated
throughout the building. Where the building is not equipped with a fire alarm
system, alarm notification appliances shall be provided throughout the area where
the change of occupancy occurs and shall be automatically activated.

§912.4.1 Means of egress for change to higher hazard category. When a
change of occupancy classification is made to a higher hazard category (lower
number) as shown in Table 912.4, the means of egress shall comply with the
requirements of Chapter 10 of the IBC 2009. '..
Exceptions:
1. Stairways shall be enclosed in compliance with the applicable
provisions of Section 803.1.
2. Existing stairways including handrails and guards complying with
the requirements of Chapter 8 shall be permitted for continued use
subject to approval of the code official.
3. Any stairway replacing an existing stairway within a space where
the pitch or slope cannot be reduced because of existing
construction shall not be required to comply with the maximum
riser hei ht and minimum tread depth requirements.
4. Existing corridor walls constructed of wood lath and plaster in
good condition or 'A -inch -thick gypsum wallboard shall be
permitted.\
5. Existing corridor doorways, transoms, and other corridor openings
shall comply with the requirements in Section 705.5.1, 7055.2,
and 705.5.3.

as specified in the IBC 2009 for the new occupancy.

portion thereof shall conform to the provisions of this code as they relate to
new construction without requiring the unaltered portion(s) of the existing
building or building system to comply with this code. Additions, alterations,
renovations or repairs shall not create an unsafe or hazardous condition or
overload existing building systems.
Exceptions:
1. Storm windows installed ever existing fenestration.
2. Glass only replacements in an existing sash and frame.
3. Existing ceiling, wall or floor cavities exposed during
construction provided that these cavities are filled with
insulation.
4. Construction where the existing roof, wall or floor cavity is
not exposed.

• If an energy component of an existing building is replaced, that
n element must comply with the energy code. However no component
of an existing building must be upgraded for compliance with the
energy conservation provisions of the code unless the component is
replaced with a new system or there is a change in occupancy to a use
that would demand an increase in demand for fossil fuel or electrical
energy.
• These prescriptive values of exterior walls only apply to complete
new wall systems. For existing walls where the cavity is exposed
during construction, the level of insulation is not required to comply
with the minimum building thermal'.envelope requirements, but is
instead only required to be filled with any type of insulation. And if
the wall cavity is not exposed, no additional insulation is required.
