Box 416 North Andover, MA 01845 RE: North Andover Baseball Field Replacement Scoreboard Column/Foundation Design Carl Thomas Field Complex (1)[3,1 Project No. D3557) Deal-Mark: As requested (per our proposal dated 8/5/16) we have reviewed the structural requirements for the foundations and support columns of the two proposed scoreboards at the referenced facility. Based on the information you provided, each scoreboard is to be supported on two wide flange steel columns spaced at 4'on center. The top of the scoreboards (with sponsor panels above) will be no more than 16'-6" above the finished grade (10' to bottom of scoreboards). The steel support columns are to be cast directly into round (formed) concrete piers which are embedded into the ground. Each scoreboard will be 4'high by 8'wide by 8" deep and will have a 1'-9" high by 8'wide sponsor board across the top. The scoreboards will be supported by two wide flange steel columns, placed 4'-0" on center, which will be inserted into round concrete piers. The scoreboards are to be mounted to the wide flange steel columns such that the columns are oriented properly per the manufacturer's details (webs of columns perpendicular to the face of the scoreboard). Our calculations have determined that the wide flange steel columns can be reduced from the manufacturer's suggested W8x3 l's to W6x20's based on the size of the scoreboard, sponsor pan- els, and height above grade (using the code specified wind speed of 100 MPH). Steel shall be 50 Ksi, We recommend the columns be hot dipped galvanized. The support columns shall be cast directly into formed 24" diameter round concrete piers which are embedded into the supporting soils (2,000 psf minimum bearing capacity assumed- must be confirmed by the contractor). The piers shall have an embedment depth of 5'-9" below finished grade and the wide flange steel columns shall be embedded 5'-6" below grade into the concrete piers (centered). The soil below and surrounding the concrete piers shall be thoroughly and properly compacted during backfilling and shall be backfilled evenly to prevent uneven loading. The concrete must be air entrained concrete with a minimum compressive strength of 3000 psi at 28 days. PROPOSED REPLACEMENT OF SCOREBOARDS ON CARL THOMAS I & CARL THOMAS 2 NORTH ANDOVER BOOSTER CLUB LITTLE LEAGUE P.O. BOX 416 NORTH ANDOVER, MA 01845 www.nayouthbasebalt.org EXISTING CONDITIONS The Carl Thomas Field Complex located off Massachusetts Avenue and Dana Street currently consists of three baseball fields, Carl Thomas I/Upper which borders Dana and Marblehead Streets,Carl Thomas 2/Lower and Carl Thomas 3 which border Massachusetts Avenue. Two of these fields, Carl Thomas I and 2 have existing scoreboards (refer to Attachment No. 1). The scoreboard at Carl Thomas 1 is located in the southwest corner/right field outside the fenced in playing field. This scoreboard is supported by two (2) -4 x4"steel tubes that are installed on a concrete footing, and was once powered from the concession stand through buried conduit and a light controller by this building. 1-lowever,power was Cut off several years ago when the light controller was removed. This scoreboard is currently not functional and is obsolete. A manual scoreboard is located in right centerfield of Carl Thomas 2 outside the fenced field, and is installed on two (2)pressure treated 4 x 4 posts. Pictures of the existing scoreboards at Carl Thomas I and 2 are included in Attachment No. 1. Proposed Replacement of Scoreboards Through fundraising efforts,North Andover Booster Club Little League (NABCLL.)has secured funding from Commonwealth Motors of Lawrence, MA for the purchase of two (2) solar powered scoreboards to replace the existing ones at Carl Thomas I/Upper and 2/Lower. Tnstallation of the sign footings, steel supports and the signs will be performed with volunteer labor and equipment. The existing scoreboard at each field will be removed and disposed of legally,with the concrete footing at Carl Thomas I demolished to below grade. The new scoreboards will be erected in the same locations as the existing ones, Scoreboard Construction Two (2) options for powering the scoreboards were considered, including electric and solar. Electric power was considered for each location as the purchase cost for this type of scoreboard is far less than the solar powered model. Flowever, the condition of the existing buried conduit to the scoreboard at Carl Thomas I is unknown and likely new conduit and an electric service would need to be installed back to the Concession Stand. There is also no electric power installed to the scoreboard at Carl Thomas Lower. New conduit would need to be installed from the concession stand to this scoreboard. The costs to install new conduit and electric power to each new score board and the restoration of the trench areas were evaluated in comparison to the costs of solar powered scoreboards. Based on our assessment of the costs, and impacts to the playing fields, NABC LL concluded that it was more cost effective and environmentally friendly to install solar scoreboards. BOX 416 NORTH ANDOVER, MA 01845 www.nayouthbasebalt.org YA I Scoreboard Construction &Details A graphic representation of the scoreboards is included in Attachment No. 2, and features a sponsor panel at the top of each scoreboard(front and back) for Commonwealth Motors. The background colors are red and black which are consistent with those of the North Andover Knights. The scoreboards will be Model MSBBS5 LED as manufactured by BSN Sports and each will be powered by two (2) solar panels. Each scoreboard will be 4' high x 8' wide x 8" deep,with an 8' wide sponsor banner at the top and be supported by two (2)W6 x 20 hot dip galvanized steel (50 Ksi) columns, spaced 4' on center that will be embedded in concrete footings. Based on calculations and the letter(copy enclosed) prepared by Daigle Engineers, each of the W6 columns will be supported by a 24" diameter concrete footing, with a depth of 5'-9"below grade. Each W6 x 20 column will be centered in the footing and be embedded 5'-6" in the concrete. Mounting columns will extend 14'-6" above grade with each scoreboard attached to the supports by the mounting flanges on the board. Scoreboards will be mounted approximately 6" below the top Of the supports with the sponsor panel extending above the poles by approximately 1'-3", bringing the total height of the board to approximately 15'-9"above the existing grades. The scoreboards will each be powered by two (2) 50watt solar panels,with the panels mounted on the top of the support poles with brackets. A battery box will be mounted to the back of the right pole/1-bearn when viewing the scoreboard from the rear at a height that is easily accessible for installing and removing the battery. One rninitnurn 80 Amp-Hour rating battery will be installed in the battery to power the scoreboard. The scoreboard is then wired to the battery box. Electrical connections will be made by a licensed electrician. Scoreboards will be remotely operated from a controller and turned off after evening games and the last weekend games. Installation instructions and operating details are included in Attachment No. 3. Impact of Lighted Scoreboards Games are played on Carl Thomas I and 2 each weekday evening and on weekends with games ending by 8:00 PM. The scoreboard and all accompanying accessories have been carefully inspected and tested before leaving the factory. However, it is possible for damage to have occurred during shipping so we ask that you inspect all shipping containers upon arrival for damage and ensure that you have all of the parts listed below. Consignee must note "DAMAGED" on the Delivery Receipt Form. Please make notations of the type of damage to the freight and to the packaging. Ask the delivery driver to call the local terminal and report immediately. The shipper is not responsible for the shipments that are not signed for as damaged upon arrival. Please contact the manufacturer immediately to report the damage. The shipper is responsible for filing the claim, unless shipped 3RD Party. If damage is discovered after delivery, call the delivery company to report the concealed damage and please call the manufacturer immediately to report. INSTALLATION OVERVIEW This manual will walk you through the installation of the scoreboard. While care has been taken to consider the many scenarios for installation, some general information applies to all. Use this guide as closely as possible to ensure proper installation, as follows: • Review the product specifications below to determine your specific installation hardware. • Determine the scoreboard's location and orientation. • Install the mounting polesll Beams (supplied by the customer). Mount the scoreboard to the polesll Beams (mounting hardware supplied by customer). • Install the control cable for cable-controlled systems (not necessary for Wireless Remote Control systems). • Install the electrical service for the scoreboard and the controller. • Install any options, such as sponsor panels or protective nets, according to the installation instructions included with each option package. • Test the installed system. • Fax/return warranty activation sheet to Scoreboard Service Company at (270) 753-3773. MOUNTING THE SCOREBOARD WITH THE POLES/1-BEAMS OUT OF ALIGNMENT MAY DAMAGE THE SCOREBOARD AND VOID THE WARRANTY. • Using the lift holes provided, connect a lift device to the scoreboard, as in the image below. Lifting Holes Mounting Flanges • Lift the scoreboard into place to the desired height, ensuring that the scoreboard is level. • Secure the scoreboard to the poles/beams using the mounting flanges attached to the scoreboard. The unit must be attached to each pole/beam on top and bottom. • If using steel I-beams, either weld the mounting flanges to the supports, or drill the mounting flanges and supports to use bolts, washers, and nuts to secure the scoreboard to the I-beams. • If galvanized steel poles are being used, weld or bolt steel angles to the mounting flanges, which can then be welded to or bolted through the pole. Refer to the figure below for illustrations of bolted mounting methods. STEP 1: MOUNT THE BATTERY BOX The battery box is designed to mount to the back of the right polell-beam when viewing the scoreboard from the rear. Electrical connections, in conduit, will be made from the solar panel(s) to this battery box. The battery box should be mounted on the right polell-beam at a height that is easily accessible. This box must be accessed to install/remove the internal battery, connect/disconnect an optional external battery, and turn power to the scoreboard on and off. If there are plans to use an external battery with this system, then the battery box should be mounted at a height that will allow for the provided 6 foot hookup cable. The connection for the external battery is located on the bottom of the gray electrical switch box found on the right side of the battery. The mounting strap attached to the back of the battery box should be used to mount the battery box to the polell-beam. It is recommended that the strap be welded to the pole/I-beam. However, the strap and polell-beam can be drilled to allow for hardware mounting using bolts, nuts, and washers. Any hardware required to mount the battery box to the pole/I-beam is not included and is the responsibility of the installer. Before the sponsor panel is lifted into place, attach the three mounting brackets to the panel using the supplied 318-16 X %" bolts, 318" flat washers, and 3/8" hex nuts. The brackets fit inside the panel. The top (for top-mounted installations) or the bottom (for bottom-mounted installations) of each panel is pre-drilled for the brackets. Note that a flat washer should be used on both top and on bottom of the panel, as illustrated on the back. 2. Lift the sponsor panel into place with the panel resting on top of the scoreboard for top-mounted installations or against the bottom of the scoreboard for bottom-mounted installations, with the face of the panel flat against the scoreboard's front 1-112" tall flange, as illustrated on the back. 3. Attach the mounting brackets (already attached to the sponsor panel) to the scoreboard's mounting angle iron, as illustrated on the back. Welding is recommended as the scoreboard's mounting angle iron and back flange are not pre-drilled to accept the mounting brackets. If the mounting brackets are bolted to the scoreboard, all mounting hardware is the responsibility of the installer. 4. The suggested method for mounting the "U" brackets is welding, though customer supplied brackets and hardware may also be used. Refer to the diagrams below. NOTE: The "U" brackets should be positioned so that they run in an East-West direction regardless of the orientation of the scoreboard.When the "U" brackets are mounted in this way, the solar panels (when attached) can be pivoted to gain the greatest exposure to the sun. STEP 3: ATTACH THE "L" BRACKETS TO THE SOLAR PANEL The two "L" brackets should be attached to the solar panel using the '/" bolts, flat washers, lock washers, and nuts - but only tighten the hardware by hand at this time. Refer to the diagrams below. STEP 4: CONNECT WIRING TO THE SOLAR PANELS 1. Remove the electrical access cover on the back of each of the solar panels. 2. Using at least 18-gauge wire (customer-supplied), connect one wire to the 'Y terminal, on the farthest solar panel from the battery box (this wire becomes the positive lead —suggested color, red). Then connect another wire to the "-" terminal, on the farthest solar panel from the battery box (this wire becomes the negative lead — suggested color, black). Both wires should be long enough to reach the next solar panel in line. These red and black wires, (from the first solar panel), will then go into the second solar panel electrical access. From the second, there should be enough length, coming out, to cover the distance down to the battery box. Refer to j the diagrams below. 3. Replace the solar panel's electrical access covers. i I j STEP 5: MOUNT THE SOLAR PANELS TO THE "U" BRACKETS u 1. The solar panels (with attached "L" brackets) should be mounted to the "U" brackets using the 318" bolts, flat washers, lock washers, and nuts —but only tighten the hardware by hand at this time. Refer to the diagrams below. 2. Fully tighten the '/" hardware used to mount the solar panel to the "L" brackets. u 0 n 3. Tilt the solar panel so that it will absorb the maximum amount of sunlight at high noon. 4. Fully tighten the 318" hardware used to mount the solar panel to the "U" bracket. STEP 6: CONNECT THE SOLAR PANEL WIRING TO THE BATTERY BOX The customer-supplied positive and negative leads, attached to the solar panels in step 4, should be passed through rain-tight conduit that connects the solar panel's connection box to the conduit hole in the upper right corner of the right side of the battery box. You will find a red I i; i I: 1 positive lead and a black negative lead. Rain-tight conduit and rain-tight conduit fittings should be used on both the solar panel end and the battery box end of the connection. At the battery box connect the positive lead from the solar panel (installed in step 4) to the red positive lead coming from the battery box. Connect the negative lead from the solar panel (also installed in step 4) to the black negative lead coming from the battery box. Refer to diagrams below for an illustration of connecting the solar panel wiring to the scoreboard. STEP 7: CONNECT THE BATTERY BOX TO THE SCOREBOARD The scoreboard is wired to the battery box via customer-supplied AC wiring which will run through rain-tight conduit from the scoreboard to the battery box. This wiring should be a minimum of 12-gauge and should be in compliance with all applicable electrical codes. Rain- tight conduit fittings should be used to connect the conduit to both the scoreboard and the battery box. The 2X4 junction box factory-mounted to the right side of the battery box houses the AC wiring from the battery box that must be connected, using customer-supplied wiring and conduit, to the AC wiring inside the control cable/power access door on the back of the scoreboard. This is usually located in the lower right corner of the scoreboard when viewing the scoreboard from the rear. Refer to diagrams below for an illustration of connecting the battery box to the scoreboard. STEP 8: INSTALL THE BATTERY MINIMUM 80 AMP-HOUR RATING. IMPORTANT! DO NOT CONNECT THE BATTERY INSIDE THE BATTERY BOX UNTIL ALL MOUNTING AND WIRING INSTALLATION IS COMPLETE. DOING SO COULD CAUSE I SERIOUS DAMAGE TO BOTH THE SCBP UNIT AND THE SCOREBOARD. 3 To install the battery, open the front access door on the battery box and place the battery in the bottom compartment. Position it as far to the left as possible. Connect the RED (POSITIVE) ring terminals to the "+" positive post on the battery. Connect the BLACK (NEGATIVE) ring terminals to the "-" negative post on the battery. After the battery has been installed and connected to the battery box, check to ensure that the ON/OFF power switch on the power inverter, located in the compartment just above the battery, is turned on.
