NASWAC Meeting Minutes

Attendees: Tina Klein chair, Steve Daly vice-chair, Bruce Thibodeau, Keith Alter, Lisa
Conti, Susan Almono, Martha Mittelstaedt, Pete Murley, Judy Walker, Norm Bagley,
Steve Sakakeeny, Tim Moulton
1)Call to order and confirm minute recorder

3)Old Business
A.Bruce met with Carolyn Dann to begin putting together some
marketing materials to use with Multi Family recycling effort.
Bruce likes the idea of organizing a group presentation to
multiple Multi-Family complexes. Keith says that the list of
who’s who is about ½ complete. Keith also noted that Mill Pond
is ready to take some action.
B.Lisa and Bruce met with school officials. Their reaction was
positive and Lisa is going to meet with the folks at the Franklin
School. Lisa will also be setting up a final audit at the Sargent
School in the spring.
C.Tina discussed the Abitibi program whereby schools get to keep

4)New Business

Bruce is looking for someone towork with him on recycling
education. Bruce also noted that Wheelabrator is willing to
renegotiate a three year contract at a lower rate.Tina brought up
the idea of monitoring household recycling with warnings and
fines. Springfield has had some measurable success with this
type of program.
B.Tim Moulton presented his research on Bay State Textiles.
Simply put, they provide the town with a trailer and pay $50.00
per ton for clothes, shoes, and small toys. Since we get no
revenue from Planet Aid Bruce will be calling Planet Aid to
cancel.We will make the switch when the Recycling Drop-off
moves to the TBI facility.
C.Another tour of TBI was suggested once they are up and
running.
5)Okay, back to old business.
A.The discussion generally centered on who wantsto fit in where
in the new organizational structure: Coordinating subcommittee,
Municipal subcommittee, Residential subcommittee or
Commercial subcommittee.We have a few definites. Susan is
working on an energy audit. Steve Sakakeeny will shadow
National Grid when they do their audit of the Middle School,
and Steve Daly expressed an interest in the small carbon diet as
it pertains to residential.
B.Keith and Lisa will be setting up 12 rain barrels at the Sargent
School

C.Rain Barrel day will be April 18which coincides with
Hazardous Waste day.
D.Norm will be spearheading the Earth Day cleanup.
E.In a fine-tuning of OPT Steve Dalywill provide Susan with
information on the Bike Bank.
F.Tim will bring a kilowatt meter to the next meeting.
G.Lisa showed us an environmental calendar drawn by kids.
