HomeMy WebLinkAboutNASWAC MeetingMinutes_04.01.09 Attendees: Lisa Conti, Tina Klein, Steve Daly, MarthaMittelstaedt, Norm Bagley, Susan Seayist-Almono, Tim Moulten, Judy Walker, Steve Parkes, Russ James, Karen Kline, Steve Sakakenen, Steve Foster, Pete Murley I.Meeting was called to order Lisa Conti recorded minutes via phone II.Accept minutes from March III.Residential Sector -Old Business a.Multi-family recycling 1.Making progress, Bruce will update next month. b.Rain barrel distribution and information table 1. Rain barrels and the NASWAC information table will be staffed from 9-12. Lisa, Tina and Judy will get there at 8:45 to set up. Tim and Peter volunteered for second shift 10-12. Action Item: Keith to update with number of barrels sold and number donated to the schools. Household hazardous has beenadvertised in school’s newsletters. 2. The information table will have Earth day info. Sneaker collection Educational materials Single stream flyer/ updated recycling at a glance Action Item: 1.Lisa to talk to Bruce to add OJ/Milk cartons and egg cartons added. 2.Flyers will be handed out to cars waiting in line. Should we also give out information about the new idling law? OPT Compost materials Our new tent c.Householdshazardous day th 1.Householdhazardous day is Saturday April 18from 9-1. d.Earth Day 1. Norm reported that 10 people had signed up and he is looking for any suggestions from the committee –email directly. 2. Lisa reported that the notice will go in the school’s newsletters for the month of April. Action Item: Martha will get it in the newspapers. Action Item: Steve D. will get it on cable. Action Item: Steve D. will get the High school recycling video at IPR on cable for the month of April/May. Action Item: Norm to get Bruce the Earth day flyer. e. Recycling Drop off relocation th 1. Tina reported for Bruce that it opened on March 30and was going well. DPW has plans to shut down the drop off site on Osgood street soon. f.Waste Reduction cost model 1.Martha volunteered to populate a spreadsheet to analyze North Andover waste. 2. Right now we are recycling 20% of our waste and each household generates 1 ½ tons of waste a year. Pay as you throw communities generate½ a year. g.Data for calculation our recycling rate 1. We need to review our numbers including trash percentages. IV.Residential Sector -New Business a. Steve D. talked about a couple DVDs that were available-Kilowatt ours and How to lose 500 pounds of carbon. Could make these availablefor a town hall viewing of the 56 minute Kilowatt ours. How tolose carboninvolves many households to participate. b.Steve D. announced that at Osgood landing there is a green home sustainable design course running from may 6-27 on Wednesdays from 6-9PM and the cost is $240. There are other courses. Tim mentioned that you may be able to audit some environmentalmanagementcourses at Harvard extension online. V.Municipal –Old Business a.Tour of science building at Brooks th Tour is this Saturday, April4, meeting at 10:15 at the hockey rink. b.Police station Steve S. updated the committee of his meeting with the Town and project manager. They seemed receptive to their ideas. Want to use a LEED checklist for guidance on green designconsideration, even though the building is not going for LEED.Want to try and fit ideals into the schedule. Next meeting is Tuesday 5PM at town hall, Susan and Steve will attend. c.Middle school Whole building assessment ongoing. Susan attended lighting discussion 2 weeks ago. Updated group that the school has 2 options either to change bulbsor to move lighting off periphery. National Grid is dealing primarily with Steve Fortardo (TownManager). Option to change bulb was favored due to lower installationcosts. National Grid pays 70% of improvements and offers loan program so no money needs to be fronted. Action Item: Susan to get update from Steve Fortardo. d.Arbor Day th Franklin school is going to get an allotment of trees on May 7to celebrate Arbor Day. Action Item: Lisa to get more information from Franklin and Steve Fortardo. VIMunicipal –New Business a.Nexamp meeting This power purchase agreement that invest capitalto put solar panels on buildings. Looking for sites. b.Energy Conservation Block Grants Susan talked about the renewing and reinvention act. There is 3.2 billion dollars available; however, initial screeningformula says we are not eligiblebut the state still gets some to develop energy efficiencies, retrofits, material conservation, energy audits, etc. c.School update Lisa reported that Sargent school is planning some activities around Earth st day. 1. A trash audit will be performedMay 1, trash will be collected the day before. This will be a repeat of the audit done in November. Our goal is to see a reduction in the amount of recyclables in the trash. Aenvironmental edutainer –jack Golden –trashisinbag.com is coming to th raise awareness for grades 3-6 on May 4at 10AM. th Classroom educational piece May 8. VII.General –Old Business a.ICLEI training Action item: Tina to contact ICLEI about the block program admission. b.Renaming ideas Pete volunteered to assemble all the name requests and bring forward to next meeting. Email Pete directly your suggestions. c. Recruiting for new committees Action Item: Tina to email chart of the new committees. Please populate yourself somewhere so Tina can efficiently move information to the right people. As an employee of DEP Tina is privy to LOTs of good information. d.State grant status Lisa asked about the No idling grant we applied for last year and Tina reported it was granted. Philip had volunteered to lead the project but has not been an active member, Lisa will assume the lead. Sargent school has been anxious to participate.
