NASWAC Meeting Minutes
October 11, 2007
Meeting location was moved to Stevens Memorial Library conference room as the DPW building was closed.
Attendees: Tina Klein, Chair; Steve Daly; Karen Kline (late) . Also Martha Middelstaedt, Debbie Eaton and Peter
Murley attended as invitees of the committee.

Call to order
Meeting commenced at 7:25 PM.
Steve Daly recorded minutes.
II
. Accept September Meeting Minutes
This item was tabled until next meeting due to the absence of Bill Hmurciak, Keith Alter and Karen Kline.
III. Old Business
A) Growing membership in the committee
Specific roles are needed to be filled: School liaison and Web Site liaison in particular
Members have been actively inviting prospective members who have shown interest in recycling leadership. We
welcomed three such residents (Martha, Debbie and Peter) this evening.
B) School Recycling
News update, to be published in the school newsletters, has been approved by Dr. Marini. (as of Friday, Oct. 12).
Steve to send
out news item to school contacts.
An effort to recycle used waxed cardboard milk containers is underway in two of the elementary schools as a pilot
program. Disposal of waste milk is being addressed.
C) Shredding Event
Steve to confirm
Proposed date is May 17, 2008. with Universal Shredding of Georgetown.
Discussed the need for provider to ID participants.. Universal Shredding is offering one box free and $5.00 per box
thereafter for residents, and $10 per box for businesses with no free boxes. Peter suggested a flat $10.00 per box
rate to simplify things for the provider.
D) Mass Recycles Paper campaign
North Andover BOS signed a resolution insupport of this state-wide campaign.
There is still an enormous amount of paper being incinerated that could be recycled.
Tina gave a MRPC program binder to Martha to review and report on at the November NASWAC meeting.
IV. New Business
A) Fall leaf collection schedule
-Town crews will pickup leaves between the dates of November 5th through
November 16th on resident's regularly scheduled trash day. ~Leaves must be in paper biodegradeable bags and
curbside by 7:00 am. ~No other yard waste will be taken at this time. (Tina found the out after the meeting. It is

B) Household Hazardous Waste Day
-Saturday, Oct. 27 from 9 AM til 1 PM @ DPW yard.
ID’s need to be checked since neighboring towns have cancelled their HW collection days.
Tina to discuss with Bill Hmurciak.
ID check should be done by the police officer assigned to the event.
Debbie Eaton will prepare a flyer inviting interest in this committee and will distribute the flyers that day at the
HHW collection.
C) Municipal Waste Reduction Outreach Toolkit
-Tina gave the toolkit to Pete Murley to review.
Particular interest is in the media outreach materials that could be shown on the NA-CAM cable channel and
press releases that could be used in OPT.
D) Winter 2008 edition of OPT
-outline due Oct. 18. Article ideas needed.
Karen Kline offered to organize articles and to correspond with Elizabeth (publisher).
Martha suggested “Green” building suggestions such as using natural materials indoors to minimize indoor
allergens. Other ideas offered involve solar heating panels and synthetic wood deck materials that don’t need
pressure treated preservative.

Kids “Ecological Footprint” program. Debbie to forward links regarding this program to Tina.
E) N.A. Enrichment Council
Karen explained a new cable television program she is coordinating for students that will combine art, literature,
recycling and “on air” presentation skills. Students are encouraged to design and build literature characters using at
least 75% recycled materials. The participating students will present their creations during a TV show.
Next meetings: Thursday, November 8 and Thursday, Dec. 13.
