Earth Day re-cap: Approx. 150 volunteers signed up for the event. Another 75 showed up that day. The 2.0 mil bags were adequate, but more than 200bags are needed. 400? Karen Kline is to be reimbursed $70.00 for out of pocket bag expense. Receipt presented. Tina will send thank you notes to Wild Oats (donated food) and to Scott Emerson (Wheelabrator donation of the (2) roll-offs, truck and driver). II. School Recycling Grant-next step Carolyn Dann’s report includes specific requests from individual schools. Bill H. will meet with V. Valentino (School Custodian Supervisor) on June 25 to review the school’s requests and to determine a time line for implementation. Action ItemTina :will update the school recycling volunteers on the program status to date. The student-produced video on recycling will air the week of July 1 on NA-CAM TV. Ideas to consider: Incentive program to share recycled paper revenue with the school Have businesses sponsor specific school recycling projects. III. Yard Sale Update Twenty four residents have signed up by the initial deadline. Additional homes may be added, but within a week, it will only be possible to add more names to the website list, not the flyer. Funds collected will be spent on newspaper advertising for this event. Publicity assignments (actions): Tina: Web site, flyer preparation with map. Karen: newspapers, Eagle-Tribune, Town Crossings, NA Citizen Steve: School newsletters, Cable TV. All: Flyer distribution as assigned. (TBD) New Business Karen Kline volunteered. I. One Person’s Trash, Fall edition, volunteer editor needed. II. Got Books ? Review of services. Tina has exchanged letters with (the since departed Got Books? intern) Fernando Morales, regarding the issues the committee has with this company’s service. More frequent container emptying (every 3 weeks), and improved signage on the container will be addressed by the company. Got Books? is offering scheduled home pick ups of significant quantities of books, etc. The town (NASWAC) is not currently compensated or credited for the pounds of home-collected materials, but Got Books? is willing to share proceeds if NASWAC will assist in the publicity of this home pick up service. The home pick up is a free service to the residents. Action: Keith will contact the new Got Books? Recycling Coordinator to follow up on the items addressed in Tina’s letter. Public Space Recycling III. : Currently any group using a North Andover public space for an event that generates trash and recyclables is encouraged to contact NASWAC (Tina) to present their recycling plan. This doesn’t always happen and it falls upon the committee (Tina) to seek out the group’s contact person and review their plan. This process needs to shift so that the responsibility restswith the user group to contact this committee in order for their public space use to be approved. A form which identifies the group, the space to be used, contact person, food to be served, Action : Steve expected trash and recyclables generated and clean up plan will be devised. The BOS should only grant approval to a group if this form has been properly filled out. The Lion’s Club is planning their annual circus. Karen will contact the Lion’s Club to see who is Action: Karen going to be the recycling contact. 4th of July Festival- IV. The committee has traditionally had a booth at this event to promote recycling and to sell recycling bins and compost bins. We may not have enough available volunteers to do so this year. Action: Tina will contact Recycle Captains to see who is available. Committee members Action: all should advise Tina on their availability. Ad hoc Committee V. to work on a Recycling Services agreement with TBI. The committee was contacted by Town Manager Mark Rees to request our participation (via an ad hoc committee)to review the agreement being considered between the town and TBI for recycling services. TBI will be assuming the recycling efforts currently done by the North Andover DPW. Tina, Bill, Steve and Keith were named to the ad hoc committee along with Thomas Trowbridge (BOH) and an attorney, to be assigned. This committee will commence work in mid-July. A copy of the “Host Community Agreement” dated Oct. 20, 2003, and the Site Assignment Decision dated June 22, 2006 issued by the NA BOH were distributed to review in preparation of Action: Tina, Bill, Steve, Keith. the ad hoc committee work. No further meetings of the NASWAC committee are planned until September 12, 2007. Note… that is a Wednesday!
