April 13, 2005 Meeting Minutes
Attendees: Tina Klein, Bill Hmurciak, Leslie Young-Lemire, Karen Kline, Steve
Daly. Minutes compiled by Steve Daly
The meeting came to order at 7:20 PM
The March meeting minutes will be distributed by email for acceptance at the
May 12, 2005 meeting.
Old Business:
A)Waste ban enforcement: Green stickers still need to be used by WM
haulers and the NA recycle truck personnel. Action:Tina will call WM to
report when she is aware of un-stickered cardboard being left behind. Bill
H. will remind his drivers to remain vigilant. The aim is to keep up the
educational effort until the waste banbecomes widely accepted by
residents.
B)Rain barrels and conservation kits: A rain barrel sample is at DPWand will
be demo’d duringHWD, April 16. Leslie and Joan are contacting the three
local papers with a press release explaining the rain barrel program.
Barrels are ordered by residents directly from the company. Delivery is
scheduled for May 21 (Shredding Event). The water conservation kits will
arrive before Sheep Shearing Day and will be available as “give-aways” at
the NASWAC (SSD) booth.
C)Zero Waste Day: The poster/essay contest has been a great success.
129 essays were submitted and 43 posters. Winners have been chosen
and will be notified through their respective schools. Action:Tina will
prepare a letter from NASWAC notifying each winner. Karen will distribute
the letters to each school. Karen will attend the April 25 BOS meeting to
recognize the winners. Karen will mount and display winning posters at
the BOS meeting. Carolyn Dann is having all posters photographed in a
Power Point presentation. Steve will present this to NA-CAM TV to be put
on the air.
D)Tina reported a total of $175.00 in NASWAC funds available. These
monies have been collected from recycled cans at public events, sale of
“NA Recycles” bags, and the North Parish Church collection of used ink
cartridges and cell phones. Tina recommended that this money be used to
purchase and distribute a “Recycle” pin to each“ZWD”essay/poster
participant. The cost is projected to be approximately $180.00. The motion
was made, seconded and unanimously voted in the affirmative. Action:
Tina to order pins.
E)NA “Spring Cleaning Event” May 21 at DPW. Hours:9am to noon.
Three programs to be offered free of charge: Shred-Pro returns to accept
paper to be shredded on site. “Reuse-A-Shoe” accepts all used athletic-
type shoes/sneakers. “E-Waste” will be collected in the form of working
PC computers (not Mac’s) and monitors. These computers are refurbished
and delivered to African schoolsthathave need forcomputers, by
AfriHope International, Inc.
F)Bill H. reported trash tonnage collected in the month of February
(immediately following the waste ban enforcement beginning Jan. 31)
showed a 103 ton decrease over February 2004. Recyclables showed a
60 ton increase in Feb. ’05 as compared to Feb. ’04.This is a ”snap-shot”
and should not be interpreted as a significant trend until data is collected
for several more months. Bill is working on establishing reliable counts of
recyclables so this figure can be tabulatedwith accuracy each month.
Steve suggested the reduction of collected trash and increase in recycled
goods is the most important thing we can be communicating back to the
community in the OPT newspaper. Action:Bill H. to work on
authenticating collected recyclables numbers.Update due for May
meeting.
G)Drop-Off area signage: Paul Stewart has installed signage and is testing
the weather-ability of the sign construction. The signage greatly improves
the instruction to drop-off users. Paul will monitor and make sign
improvements as needed.

New Business:
A)OPT Summer edition: Steve presented his notes from the questionnaire.
Questionnaire was reviewed by the committee members present. It will be
forwarded to Eco-Partners by April 19. Lead story will be a re-cap of the
Zero Waste day event of May 7. (photo)

B)Earth Day: Saturday, April 23. Bill to provide NA map to Tina for road
sign-ups. Wheelabrator has confirmed two roll offs will be delivered to
DPW on Friday, April 22. It was noted that many people will be away
during this school vacation week so the numbersof volunteers and trash
collectedmay be down. Action:Karen to solicit plastic bags (3 mil) from
area merchantsand generate thank you letters to same.Steve to contact
Rotary Club for pick up truck drivers.
C)Recycling at Edgewood. Action:Bill to determine what service has been
offered and if it is appropriate to continue providing it.
D)“Living Lawn” demo site-Tina suggested a visible town-owned grass spot
could be used to demo how effective compost is for healthy grass. Becky’s
Pond is a possibility if the town will be mowing there this summer.
E)Re-Create-using odd and ends goods for art/crafts in schools. Action:
Tina to speak with Karen K. off line regarding this.
