Amend as necessary, not to exceed one page. Good afternoon, Mr. Maylor: My name is Jeff Moon and I would like to be considered for the open vacancy on the School Committee. I have been a North Andover resident since September 2010, living at 141 Berry Street with my wife, Tiffany, and my three children, all of whom attend the North Andover Public School system. My wife currently serves as Treasurer for the North Andover Parent Advisory Council. My educational background includes a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Rochester (NY) and I am employed as a senior mechanical engineer at the Raytheon Company in Tewksbury, MA. In recent months, I have served as the president of the Berry Street Neighborhood Association (http://berrystreetna.org/), a grassroots organization committed to the preservation of the character of our neighborhood and the quality of life for our neighbors as well as the promotion of community, safety, and goodwill. In that role, I led a group of concerned residents concerned with the development of a 40B project at 16 Berry Street to reduce the scope of the project nearly 20 percent through negotiations with the developer. In addition, we successfully petitioned the ZBA to amend the comprehensive permit to preserve 20 open acres as conservation land, which would prevent future development at the site. If you require references, have questions, or need additional information, please feel free to reply to the message or contact me on my personal cell (978.884.9520). Thank you. Sincerely, Helen Pickard Andrew Maylor August 25, 2014 Town Manager 120 Main St. North Andover, MA 01845 Re: School Committee Vacancy Dear Mr. Maylor, I read about the opening on the North Andover School Committee and am submitting a letter of interest as per the statement you released on the town's website. My involvement in the North Andover Public Schools began in 1991 when I entered kindergarten at the Bradstreet School, and continued in 2005 when I graduated from North Andover High School. I feel that I was afforded many opportunities because of the wonderful education I received in our school system, and now feel that I should be giving back to my community. I have considered running for a seat on the school committee for many years. I feel that my background in education, my work experience, firsthand knowledge of our schools, and my connections in the community would make me an ideal candidate. There are many important responsibilities of the school committee, most importantly helping to plan the education of our Town's youth. Taking on these responsibilities and challenges is not something I take lightly. I have worked for over 5 years as a secondary mathematics teacher in the Lawrence Public Schools and at Central Catholic High School. Recently, I have begun implementing a one to one Wad program in my classroom. I have been chosen as a technology trainer for my department, and often attend conferences dealing with how to effectively implement and incorporate technology into the classroom. I feel that I can work to build consensus among stakeholders, even if this means compromising to achieve set goals. I will be a community participant, as our school system should be a community endeavor that engages and helps to serve all within our town. I can process information to help make decisions, while being able to recognize other people's opinions and points of view. I will be an effective communicator and an engaged listener. Finally, I will be a leader who is willing to take risks to enhance the educational experience of the youth in our school system. I welcome the opportunity to be a part of the North Andover School Committee. I am an energetic and creative individual who will always be looking to improve our educational system. I would appreciate the opportunity to speak with you or others about my potential as a School Committee Member. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I believe my public sector experience and my long standing involvement in our community have given me the foundation to be a solid addition to the board. As you know, I served the residents of North Andover for seventeen years, first as member of the Board of Selectmen, then as their State Representative. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in office and now wish to rejoin our town government as a member of the School Committee. I developed numerous skills during my time in office that will be helpful to the School Committee, none more important than listening and collaborating. Parents, teachers and administrators will know quickly that I am accessible and open to differing points of view. Working in a legislative body of 160 members demands it. Getting anything done in the House of Representatives required working with people of all stripes and I intend to bring that same attitude when working with you,the Board of Selectmen and the Finance Committee. The School Committee is embarking on its most important mission in recent years and I wish to be part of the board that will choose the next superintendant for the North Andover schools. I have two young children who will be entering the school system in the next couple of years, and like all parents, I want the best leadership in our schools for them. I have the time and energy for this position, as well as the flexibility, as I work in North Andover and would be able to adjust my schedule as the search and job demand. No letter of interest can reflect the full picture of my credentials, background or desire to serve. Please inform the Board of Selectmen and School Committee that I am available to discuss my candidacy at any time and look forward to sharing more about myself with all of them. I thank you for your time and service. Sincerely, David Torrisi 67 Settlers Ridge Road North Andover, MA 01845 (978)360-1637
