HomeMy WebLinkAbout2018-10-09 Historical Commission Minutes NORTH ANDOVER HISTORICAL COMMISSION Minutes from meeting held October 9,2018 ALL MEMBERS PRESENT I. Minutes from September 10,2018 meeting accepted unanimously. II. DEMOLITION REQUEST -136 SALEM STREET - Mr. Josh Nutter was present at the meeting. He explained that the owners of the property wish to demolish the existing house and plan to extend fields for their horses. A. Kathy Szyska, Chairman, explained that according to the terms of the Demolition By-law the Commission had to visit the site. B.October 16 , 2018 at 4pm was selected for the Commission members to visit the site C. The Commission had a brief discussion about 136 Salem Street. Carol Majahad relayed basic facts about the house. ( Built by Peter Holt in 1845-46) III. OLD BURYING GROUND - Don Slater has requested permission to remove excessive lichen on some stones. Professor Slater has taken a course on stone preservation and he will supervise the students. A. Carol Majahad spoke in favor of this request. B. The Commission voted unanimously to grant Dr.Slater's request. C.Kathy reported that she had asked the DPW to turn the OBG water back on until cold weather. IV. OLD BURYING GROUND PROGRAM - On November 7 at 7pm, at the North Andover Historical Society, Professor Slater and the students in his research group will present a public program to explain the scope of their inquiry and the techniques they are using. A. Their goal is to create a digital data base which will include initials and year of burial for every headstone, foot stone, and tomb. B. The group will also investigate the mound at the entrance to the burying ground. V. SOLDIERS AND SAILORS MEMORIAL -( improve the landscaping.) In light of the Town's current preoccupation with the September 13 Gas Crisis it was agreed to table this project until next spring. VI. BRADSTREET STONE LETTERING - The Commission has sent a letter to the School Building Committee - addressed to David Torrisi - suggesting that the stone lettering salvaged from the Bradstreet School should be displayed at the Anne Bradstreet Early Childhood Center. A reply to this suggestion has not yet been received. THE NEXT MEETING OF THE NORTH ANDOVER HISTORICAL COMMISSION WILL BE HELD TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2018 AT 4PM , IN THE SELECTMEN'S ROOM AT TOWN HALL. THE PUBLIC HEARING ON THE DEMOLITION OF 136 SALEM STREET, NORTH ANDOVER, WILL BE HELD AT THAT TIME.
