HomeMy WebLinkAbout2017-06-12 Historical Commission Minutes NORTH ANDOVER HISTORICAL COMMISSION Minutes from Meeting held June 12, 2017 ALL MEMBERS PRESENT AT MEETING I. MINUTES from the meeting of May 8,2017 were accepted unanimously. II.SOLDIERS AND SAILORS MONUMENT- The suggestion was made that the NAHC take an active role in improving the landscaping of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument which is now on the grounds of the new School Administration Building. Kathy Szyska , chairman, said that she had discussed the topic with Eva Hamori, chairman of the Village Improvement Society. Kathy will contact Eva about possible support from the Village Improvement Society. Also, any work done will have to be approved by the Selectmen. C.J. said he would arrange for time on the Selectmen's agenda when appropriate, III. The OLD BURYING GROUND - Jim Wefers said that he had arranged for NAHC members to meet with Al McGregor at 9:30 am Monday, June 26, to look at the proposed wrought-iron gate. !V. THE BERRY STREET PROJECT - Kathy and Anne told the group about their recent visit to the Berry Street Project. Kathy described the free stone wall, granite pillars, and signage for the burial ground. Jim had taken pictures of the site which he shared with the group. The one problem was that the site had not been mowed. The project manager explained that this was because they had to obtain a smaller mower that would not damage the stones. V. THE STEVENS ESTATE. Kathy described recent improvements at the Stevens Estate where she attended a Village Improvement Society meeting. VI. SUGGESTED STATUE -The Commission members discussed a resident's suggestion to place a statue of Anne Bradstreet in the Old Burying Ground. The Commission agreed that additions of that type would be inauthentic and not appropriate in the Old Burying Ground NEW BUSINESS I MACHINE SHOP VILLAGE - Jan Williams, who is the NAHC liaison to the Machine Shop Village District, explained that they had recently had a request to use solar panels on a building roof. The request was denied, with the suggestion that solar panels should not be used when there is a “streetside view" of the panels.
