Meeting Minutes for August 13, 2019 North Andover Sustainability Committee

2. Introductions
3. Committee Activities:
- April – Town Wide Cleanup Event
o Sell rain barrels and composters
- Festival Presence – Artisan Markets, Sheep Shearing, Fall Festival
4. End of Year Planning:

- Artisan Market – September 15 10am – 2pm, fully staffed
- Fall Festival - September 22nd – Sustainability Committee will not attend
5. Plastic Bag Ban
- 4 people are researching and working on the proposal
- The research includes: determining grace period, enforcement, what do the citizens want,
objections to plan, other town sample by-laws
- Proposal needs to be presented to the Board of Selectman (October/November?)
- If Board rejects proposal, a petition will be needed
- If Board accepts proposal, by-laws will need to be developed (November – February?)
- During November – February, committee would need to do public outreach to spread the
message and get feedback
- By-laws would be added to the warrant in March timeframe
- Town Meeting will be held in May 2020
o Does it need majority vote or 2/3rds vote?
6. Food Sorting
- Started in Thompson – 45 – 50 lbs/day of trash saved
- NAMS – 85-90 lbs/day of trash saved
- Program is working well and very effective
- Meeting with Kittridge to roll out immediately – need Adult help/direction
- Implement a “Green Team”- student helpers – to assist in the program and help their peers
- Applied for more grant money to help take the compost off site
7. Promotion
- Twitter – new twitter handle @NASustain_MA will be managed by Jess
8. Online Ethics
- Committee members need to complete in order to be part of a town committee
9. Vish-Project
- Solar Power Exhibit
o Sturdy, but not weather resistant
o Great learning opportunity
o Patent application was submitted
o Possibly bring to the high school to modify or use as a learning opportunity
